P85 on a DOO

I ran one on a '07 800R. They work good, but you will feel ALOT of vibration. It likely shortens crank life as it is 6 lbs lighter than a TRA.

I was reading somewhere last year of people attaching the Doo starter ring to the P85 and getting it to not shake as much. Just and idea.

Huh ?

I have heard of dooing this ...but why...Ive had nothing but great luck with the TRAs that Ive run. ??? Dino

"Shrug". Some people want more. The TRA is a spring balance system that is constantly willing to get out of wack. The spring force curve would stay the same even in other space, but the motor that is supposed to be balanced against by the spring, won't stay constant, even on a day ride.

So naturally people don't wait for a ride that just matches what the spring is tuned for, and then end up with a crappy ride. This happens lots, just look at the number of posts.

The short comings of the TRA really show up when you ride large elevation changes or humidity/temperature swings or load changes from a toboggan or lots of snow. Then you just fry belts and can't maintain proper RPM band width. For those of us that are lucky enough to ride the areas that can sell videos, the TRA is a crap shoot. Who needs that?

The TRA is good enough for most riders, glad to hear you are one of them.

Yuppers and glad to be "one of them" :face-icon-small-disStarted with a 583 a long time ago, last sled was an 02 800 with Kelseys drop in piston kit...in all my TRA days I have never fried a belt. Always rode hard, and had a great time spinning 8250 rpms. But then again I am not afraid to ask for advice when it comes to clutching. Dino

I started hillclimbing with a 333 Polaris, so what is your point?

I've fried lots of belts. Try pushing that flipper thing on the right handlebar down and putting some tape on it to be sure it stays down next time.

My point is that you don't know how to set up your clutches and you like so many others HAVE to blame the machine. Dino

ya know what, I'm starting to really hate Polar clutches. TRA suck but I should throw a grand or two on a better clutch because mine sucks so bad.

Vinnie Clark seems to do ok with his TRA, as well as the rest of the factory doo guys, AND as well as the rest of the guys that I ride with. Not just racing, all around Vinnies sled works with that inferior TRA. I'm not dropping names just for the sake of it, just to say that the clutches on doos will work with tuning.
I looked at a p85 but then I figured out that I only need to undestand the TRA. I still don't understand it worth **** but that's only because there are so many tuning options. I don't think I'm a great rider, don't proclaim to know all about clutching, but I ride with good riders and know what a good working sled should work like. If this Polar and your gearing is the end all to beat all, then I want to see it.
Yamadoopolardude I ride the Torpy area and would like to ride with you to see what we're missing out on. Inbox me so I can ride with you, please. There's nothing like a bit of competition to see what works best.
I'm not trying to start **** talk or smack talk, I just want to see why my sled sucks so bad with a doo clutch.

Sorry to poach the thread. The p85 is pretty light compared to the doo and the guys that I have talked to find it vibrates quite a bit therefore making the crank life shorter. Winterbrew seems to know his **** so I would listen to his advice since he's tried it.
