Owner Feedback: Longtracked Mountain Max's

Hello all 2 stroke fans. I'm looking for some owner feedback from you western riders to help me finalize my plan for long tracking my mountain max over the sumer. I ride in northern new england, and its mostly natural glades or logging areas. We do have some western style open bowls but it is not the primary riding area. Here are my 3 scenarios for a new track that I would like some feedback on. The sled is 2002 Mountain Max, Vforce reeds, mbrp can, stripped skid and some other mods but the engine is mostly stock accept for the reeds and can. I'm not really interested in pipes. The sled did have electric start and reverse added by the previous owner. I do not know what the ratio in the chain case is. I like the electric start, but am going to retrofit an antigravity 8 cell battery in a custom built bracket over the summer as well to shed some weight.

#1 151" x 2" challenger and switch out to anti-ratchet drivers, 8 tooth 2.52 pitch

#2 151" x 2.31" X 16" challenger and have tracks usa cut it to 15" and switch to 7 tooth 2.52" anti ratchets to clear the extra lug height

#3 154" x 2" x 15" challenger. This one is a doo track. I can swap to 7 tooth 2.86 pitch drivers that are the same diameter as 8 tooth 2.52" drivers. This would give me a slightly longer track than the 151" but I am worried about the extra track being a little too much for the engine and I'll be under powered. I would also think that this might be a bit long for a between the trees machine.

I have read that 151" is the best all around length for the mountain max. The camoplast challenger is light years ahead of the yoko track and the extra length adds a lot of flotation and when sidehilling its really balanced so the back end doesn't want to wash out on a steeper sidehill.

Thanks guys! Pray for snow!!!

my .o2
I would say #1.
Easiest and cheepest. There is not enough differance to justifty the others.

I'm running a 159 now, I had a 156 and my buddy has a 151. IMO the longer the better for most snow conditions in the trees because with a longer track you can go slower without getting stuck.

Switching from my old 156X2 to my current 159X2.25 (supposedly 2 1/8, but measured 2.25) made a night and day difference for traction, but it does rub sometimes on the top of the tunnel with 8x2.52 drivers. I think you can run a 16 wide track with a couple minor mods.

# 1.... but do yourself a favor and get some pipes... absolutely best mod, hands down for the MM!

Well I'm on the way. Picked up a 151" challenger off eBay that was only ridden a couple times before the sled was parted out. It's a current part number 9876 full clip track. I'll be looking for the rest of the parts to put it all together now. If anybody has a set of extrovert drivers new or in good shape I'm interested. I'm going to get the tunnel extension from Hartman and rail extensions from tracksusa.

Thinking down the line, what skids should I keep an eye out for that are direct bolt ins? I'd like to not have to move holes or the drop brackets

I put a ski-doo SC10-III from an '06 summit adrenaline in my '97 re-used some Yami rail extensions and put a 159" Polaris series V in it. Works great! The doo skid is close to a direct bolt in, it's a little narrower, so you have to add spacers inside the tunnel where it bolts in, I think 1/4" I started a thread on here, SCIII in a mountain max, posted measurements there.

leave the skid alone, that sled is a really good sled, but with its age and your riding location, is it really worth it?

i'd go long as what is easily available but remember, unless you drop and roll your chain case you cannot fit a lug deeper than 2". I installed a cat power claw 2.5 but had to cut it down to 2 1/8 for snow evcuation.

Right now I am running the extrovert drivers with my track loose. SLP pipes and best mod yet. Gonna stretch it out to 15? soon, remove heat exchangers under foot and install them in tunnel, cut footboards off and install some B&M boards, install EGT's.
