Our 3 Hour Mess Video

So we got ourselves in a mess last saturday and it took us 3 hours to get out. We went down a hill that was very dense thick pine trees and when we got down a little way we realized that would could not go all the way down. The trees were pretty dense though and we could not make it back up the same way we came. Long story short.... after over at least 14 stucks and quite a few attempts of getting out and after having to cut down around 8 trees we finally got out 3 hours later. The trees were all small trees, a couple were 4-5" in diam though. (Not shown in video.) Thank goodness for the $6 hand chain saw I bought 3 weeks ago from amazon. If anyone thinks they should get one of those it certainly came in handy on this trip.

Chainsaw link $24.99 Looks like I got a heck of a deal when I bought mine. It would still be worth every penny at $25. I might have got the 24" saw but I cant remember. The link is for the 36" saw

lol Ya I would have made it on attempt 2, 3, or 4 if someone wasn't in my way each time. Problem was there was no base at all as no one had ever been there before so getting traction was a bit of an issue.

Our first ride of the year was like that. 3 of us went down into an area that required us to go back up to get out. It was rough because the early season snow still had lots of fallen trees blocking routes. Took several hours with nighfall and a storm coming in. We ended up getting out but had several miles to get back to the trucks in a storm, thankfully we had GPS to help guide us out or we would have spent the night.

Thanks for sharing. Were you riding Fairview? If so, what canyon?

Nope we were up Soapstone area. Took off at Nobletts and went north as far as you could go basically. Started to go down to the left of the huge cliffs over there and turned around before it got too steep.

It was definately a time we will not forget and after digging sleds out that many times I was cramping up. Still not in the best of shape i guess. :face-icon-small-ton

Its a good thing we got out with some light left becasue my phone that I use as the GPS had died too. Riding at night can be a bit tricky if you dont know exaclty where you are at.

Oh yeah the saw is very light weight though. Keeps my power to weight ratio down compared to the hatchet. LOL.

Always have a way to move timber. I carry 3 saws. One in the shovel handle. One folding. And a cable/chain saw for the big logs

I agree. This is the first time we have really had to cut down trees. Well except for the time we used a chain saw right by my cabin when I jumpd through the Quakies and took down like three trees 6" + diam.

Were you heading down into iron mine creek drainage? If so you are lucky you got turned around I have heard of several rescue operations getting sleds out of that area.....btw how was the overall snow up that way?

So those Pro's are all hype????? LMAO

I have to ask if you were prepared enough to feel comfortable about spending the night.

BTW: very entertaining vid and I'm glad you went home to your family's. Hector and I would have saved you!:face-icon-small-win

Thanks. I know there are some peeps out there to help out. Ya we could have spent the night. I have been snow caving a few times. I also carry an emergency blanket, matches, lighters, SPOT, I had lots of water, candy bars, extra gloves, saw, bottle to empty gas from sled into to start a fire, beanie for head, first aid kit, hand warmers, head lamp and i am sure a few more things. Thats why my pack is 20 lbs.

Ha ha ha the Skidoo was the one holding us up. It got stuck 7 times down there.:face-icon-small-win 3 PROS stuck total of 7 times. Although only 1 of my sticks was my fault. I could have kept going if the tree in front of me wasn't so big. I stopped because I knew it was going to be worse if i got stuck in the tree. Other sticks were because some one was in the way. And one of the sticks was because he tried to climb a 20 ft tall tree and he tipped over. That sled is still hands down much better then my REV ever was. Also a piece of my exhaust valve gasket had blown out. We fixed it with part of a reflector earlier that day and it held great all day. I never really pushed it until we tried to get out. Then most of the rest of the gasket blew out and my sled started running like crap again. So i did not have full power to make it out of there. Could pull much past 7000 rpms trying to get out.

Yes it looks like it is Iron mine drainage. Iron Mine Lake is directly north of where we were at. Get on google earth and draw a line straight south and go thru the stream bottom and up the hill in the Pines. There is a patch that is somewhat thinner but we were to the right of that in the thick trees. A little further right and it is the huge cliffs.

The snow was pretty good. It was a beautiful day to start but the clouds came in and so we stayed in the trees where we could see for most of the day. It had snowed 12-18" since the week before so the snow was pretty soft with a decent base under it, well except for where we got stuck. No base at all.

Amazon.com 36" Hand Chainsaw. I might have got the 24" now that I think about it. I will have to check later. Its in my sled at my work.

Looks like i got sweet deal when I bought mine because I only paid $6.99 when I bought it. Its now $24.99 But it would still be worth it for $25. Trust me it works!!!

If you look at 5:43 you can see one of the trees laying down that we cut down.
