Optima batteries...are they worth it?

Well, it's time to put a battery in my pickup. Looking at an optima red top. Are they any better than your run of the mill auto parts store special?

They are nice because they are sealed so you can put them in the cab if you need to, they also will not leak if you flip them or put them on their side. With that there are many other batteries that do the same thing. Optima has done a great job with the marketing in getting their name out there.

If this is just a daily driving truck, nothing special I wouldn't bother.

I bought one at costco, blue top, to use as a trolling motor battery, I also bought a new state of the art charger to charge it. Before I bought it they told me I could bring it back if I did not like it. So I tried it for a couple weeks. It ran out of juice alot sooner than my old battery, so I took it back and got two bigger deep cycle/starting marine batteries for the same money, one of the #27 batteries will run my trolling motor almost twice as long as the blue top. As for trolling applications I would not get another.

Is the Blue top a deap cycle?

Deap cycle has more amp hours (rating) usually less CCA (cold cranking amps)

They are designed to have less "punch" but will run longer. If you get a HUGE battery that has a lot of cold cranking amps but less amp hours they will die quickly. Hope that makes sense for people. Get the right battery for your application.

Milehi, I think it is their marine application battery. For either starting or deepcycle. It was the smaller of the two bluetops they offer.
