Is there any way of checking to see if the crank was twisted a bit? Maybe by timing marks at either end, or measuring through a spark plug hole to see the TDC of each piston with a dial?

I'm a poo man and I will say the 900 poo is crap, I would go with the cat the 1m will out climb out pull the poo will just plain out perform the poo.

I've ridden with quite a few guys with 2003-2004 1M 900 Cat's ...

They will not out perform a 900 RMK .... when the 900 RMK is clutched right and is actually running :o

I will say however, they will most assuredly out perform a 900 RMK dead on the snow and even get you back to the truck alive :) It's sort of circumstancial as to if the 900 RMK is actually running or not, which is really hit or miss with these sleds ;)

With that said, the 1M 900's do still perform pretty well and are a good sled with loads of mod potential.

Those poo's run sweet twice a year. the other 40 times you'll be swearing. For some dang reason though when everyone is drinking :beer; and BS ing the guys with those 900's always remember the 2 days they ran like a beast

My 04 1M was one of the funnest sleds I ever had, especially in its' day. I modded the piss out of that sled, and turned it into a 1010. Pulled hard all day long!

I agree with Dogmeats ascertation, that a 900 Cat will not out perform the 900 Polaris, unless the Polaris is acutally dead in it's tracks.

I poke fun at the expense of my 900 RMK, but in actuality, I drive the pants off of this sled every weekend, the only two times that it left me stranded were due to clutch bolt problems. Along with all of the other problems, I have found ways to circumvent this situation, and have enjoyed many great miles of trouble free riding.

Some of the earlier comments about being a capable person with a wrench in your hand are pertinent with the Polaris, as the Dealers really never did get a handle on these sleds before Polaris dropped the manufacting of them.

The Cats have always been very "user freindly" when it comes to modding them up, they are like the "small block Chevy" of the sledding world. That being said, I have seen my share of broken 900 Cats being towed at the end of the day.

One other consideration is the style of sled, nobody has mentioned this so far. The Cat 900 is of the old "sit down" riding style with a more centralized position. The Polaris 900 is actually a wicked chassis, rider forward stand up positioning, ...IMO far superior to the older Cat's style. The 2.4" lug track is also a great powder track.

So I get some more info from the Cat guy today. Turns out the 900 1M is an EFI model. Funny he didn't mention that before.

Now, is the EFI model as good as the carbed model? I'm not huge into mods, a pipe would probobly about do it. Anything to worry about?

If you're not going to mod a whole lot, the EFI is as good as the carb. Even when modding, you just need a fuel control box and you're good to go.

I have been around a couple of good running polaris 900s the o6 is far superior to the o5. Problem with them would be (acording to a good friend who works at a polaris dealership) the cranks usually go between 2-3000 miles. when they do you can buy another sled for less than fixing your old one. The bulkheads crack the clutch end snaps off the crank and the wire harness cracks and rubs threw due to vibration. They arnt worth scrap after that. the other thing I dont like about the poo is the vibration never cleans up and it will put your hands to sleep while rideing.
the only real issues with the cat are cracking of the bulkhead and rails if you ride hard. normal expectancy of the crank (6000) pistons should be changed 2500-3000 miles along with the drive chain. thats just if you prefer to do preventive instead of repair. The efi is good if you dont want to mod or tinker, if you do it will cost a little more.
I had 3 cats and would take one over the polaris any day. julio

No Contest.....I had that exact sled and it is still one of my favorite sleds that I have owned. The polaris 900 is one of the worst sleds they ever made, kinda like Cats Powder Special 700.

One issue to watch is the driveshaft bearing behind the driven clutch. Also, if it's blown a belt at high load, they can twist the crank. Some reports of electrical problems stemming from worn wires. Some have exhaust valve problems. That's all I can think of off hand, there are a couple threads that address issues in the AC 1M section.

10-4 on this one!;) ESPECIALLY the drive shaft bearings! If the speedo doesnt work...you know!

I think your better of telling us how much money you want to spend because those two choices kinda suk...you can get something better for whatever monies you want to spend.

The 900 Cats are rock solid sleds. EFI is great. Motors are super dependable. I had a 2004 1M 800 159" EFI and no major problems. My Dad has a 2004 King Cat and again very dependable. I wouldn't touch that 900 Poo with a 10' pole!

I bet for the price of either one of those, you could pick up a Rev or a M7/M8 and have a reliable, new chassis sled....just a thought. That's definetly the way I would go....

Give ya three guesses as to what i voted.............;)

Hey, one of those is mine! I guess that gives away my vote also.

I have one of each. A 04 king cat carb and a 04 mountain cat efi. The EFI sled will run circles around the carb sled all day long !!! EFI is the only way to go!

When I was looking for a sled I could afford, I priced out a ton of M-7's. Got the 900 for $1000.00 less than the CHEAPEST one. Dont think you'll have much luck on this one unless you come across a REAL STEAL!
