Hello all,
I've tried the search function...found several related topics, but none actually answering the question.

How do you get from Greenwater to Whistlin Jacks...step by step??

My girlfriend and I have always been intrigued and always wanted to make the trip.

We know about Clems trips on Thursday nights to eat Prime Rib, but we both work really early on Friday mornings so thats not really an option (without taking a day off anyway).

Do you take the roadways, the Naches Trail, how many miles is it one way??

Enquiring minds wanna know!! :)

Thanks in advance,
Vince & Theresa

There's trail the whole way...

it's about 40 miles from Greenwater snowpark to Whistlin Jacks...

Have you looked at the state parks website for trail maps..??.. good resource...

If you're familiar wht the roads over on the east side near 'Jacks... then...

you go up FS70 to Govornment Meadows... aka 'the cabin'...

ride throught eh meadow to the east side, and follow the trail down to the 'little natches' road...

Follow the road(groomed trail) to the snowpark on the East side... go past the snowpark about a 1/4mile and turn left onto the snowmobile trail... follow this trail up and over to 'milk creek road'... turn left(uphill) and follow this road up and over to hwy 410... just accross from 'Jacks'...

have fun...

Getting There From Greenwater

The first half of your trip to Whistlin' Jacks from Greenwater is like going to Raven's Roost: From the Pyramid Peak Sno-Park, take whatever trail you are most comfortable with to the 19 road (any of the direct/groomed routes from this sno-park to the intersection of 19 and 1914 is about 11 miles - plus or minus a 1/2 mile). Once you get to the 19/1914 intersection, continue east on the 19 road for 6 miles to the Raven's Roost turn-off (the 1906 road). However, instead of turning onto 1906 towards Raven's Roost, continue straight for another 4.5 miles to the Little Naches Sno-Park. You will know when you reach this sno-park (it'll be to your left) because the 19 road becomes plowed for vehicle traffic from this point all the way to Hwy 410.

Once you reach the Little Naches Sno-Park (roughly 22 miles from the Pyramid Peak Sno-Park at Greenwater), you will need to ride along the embankment of the snowplowed 19 road for about 1/2 mile to 1903.

Keep in mind from this point on, there are lots of different connecting trails you can take to get to WJL - we will describe one of the shortest that is also marked with the brown trail signs.

Turning left onto 1903 from the 19, you will travel about 1 mile to your first "Y" in the road - the brown trail marker sign will point you to the right and on to 615. Traveling the ungroomed 615 for about 2 miles, you will come to the intersection of 1901 - turn left onto this groomed road. About a 1/2 mile on 1901 is where you'll reach your second "Y". Again, the brown signs will lead you to the right and onto 715 (not groomed). This 1.2 mile section can get interesting because of a climb commonly known as "Ice Hill". It is fairly steep, narrow, curved, wooded and typically icy. Sounds fun, eh?! The good news is that a work group went up in October 2002 and widened the path with hopes to run a groomer through that section making it easier to ride. However since it's uncertain how often or how successful Ice Hill will be groomed, I'd still be prepared for when brakes won't work going down or when loss of traction becomes a backwards slide half way up...

After you've gotten over Ice Hill, you will come out of the trees and back onto logging roads for 2 miles. At the intersection of 585 and 1708, turn left onto 1708 (groomed) for a 1/2 mile to Milk Pond. At Milk Pond, stay to the right on the 1707 (also groomed) for 2 miles. This next part is an easy one to miss... mainly because of a misleading sign that reads " <-- Cliffdell ". So two miles after Milk Pond, or just about at the 579 and 580 spur roads off 1707, there is a trail on the left that leads up into the trees - it is directly across from this "to Cliffdell" sign that makes you think you should follow the sign... I mean, you've been following brown signs all along thus far, right? Wrong! Ignore this one sign and make the left turn up the ungroomed trail. This is the 572 and you'll be on it for about a mile and a half. When you come to the next intersection with a groomed route, this is the 1705. Take a right and follow that around for 4 miles. When you get to Hwy 410, you can't miss the Texaco/Shell gas station and Whistlin' Jacks Lodge right next door!

Total distance: ~36 miles each way

Rider Ability: 80% of this is pretty easy (especially to Raven's Roost). The parts that get tricky are once you get on the Yakima side and all the ungroomed sections described above that cross deep ruts, several wash-outs, fallen trees and most unpredictable and consequently dangerous, Ice Hill. If the efforts taken to groom Ice Hill pan out in the 2002-03 season, the ease of travel may become closer to 90% easy...

Stop and talk to Clem - he has said he's got a map that will get you there if you can read your odometer. But like others have suggested - it's probably pretty skimpy snow conditions. And it IS possible to get there without going down ice hill.

we got lost a few years ago on our way there and did not go on the ice shute but on our way back we did have to come down it.:eek: and now everytime we go back we still can't find the way without useing the shute.

There are two routes to get to WJL from Greenwater. Ice Hill is the shorter route but I imagine it's pretty bad right now.

The longer, but safer, route is thru Lilly Pond. It is about 10 miles longer but well worth it when it's icy, like now.

Also, if the snopark at GW is still down low you can add another 6 miles each way, so figure about 55 miles each way to WJL via Lilly Pond route.

Ken - How many miles is it if Lee is leading? 200 or so?????? (Finally getting some snow here today) :beer; :beer; :beer;

I have a cabin in the WJ's area in Cliffdell. I live in enumclaw and take a weekender snowmobile trip to our cabin over Govt meadows down little naches hwy over the cutoff to the cabin. About a quarter way up Ice Hill there is a cutoff trail to the left that if it is in good condition with no trees across the trail, you can take that and bypass a majority of Ice Hill. The trail is not marked however the first quarter run UP the hill you will hit a flat bench spot on the hill look to the left and there should be the trail. I am sure the trail has been marked with others sled tracks. I take that to and from the cabin all the time when Ice Hill is at its worst. The trail is a little tight/singletrack and you will have to climb a couple of steep areas in the trees but there is sufficient snow and for the most part lack of ice to slide on. If you are going as a group give yourselves sufficient following room up/down the hill. If you have to go down Ice Hill, carry a pair of ski brakes, I use a couple of dog collars attached around each ski that provides enough resistance to slow your sled down. At least it has worked for me. Good Luck it is a very nice ride.

Thanks for that tip Proflex.

Bob, It was great riding with you last weekend, good to see some new terrain.

I think Lee knows every FS road, jeep trail, hiking trail, and goat path between Issaquah and Ellensburg.

Let me know when you do your WJL overnighter, Linda and I would like to go.

Excellent replies to my question folks...sounds like it could get quite confusing the closer you get to Whistlin Jacks, particularly if your trying to find the alternate route around the "Ice Hill".

Doesnt sound like a trip to take my girlfriend with me on, at least not the first attempt to try to figure out the route. Probably better to scope it out on my own first to get the lay of the land so to speak.

I've got a pretty good sense of directions and the patience to figure things out, she tends to get a bit worried when I take a couple of wrong turns here and there until I get my bearings, lol.

The first 3/4's of the trip sounds like a piece of cake though.

Appreciate all the replies folks...thanks! :beer;:beer;:beer;
