Oil tank leaking on my XP!!!

I have an '08 XP and the oil tank started to leak. Now the leak is pretty bad and making a mess on my muffler and my belly pan. Not to mention the cost of the oil!

Any answers to my problem???

Where is it leaking from? I have a couple of my rentals that have cracked from people jumping them and landing really hard or landing off camber etc. I have also had one crack from running into a deep creek bank hard. If the dealer will warranty it great, but it could (I don't know how you have ridden) be from your own doing.

mine was cracked where the pull rope handle mount is screwed onto the oil tank. don't remember ever slamming a knee into it or anything, dealer said he would cover it, but brp wouldn't. If i remember right he charged me 80$ for parts.

I think that was a warranty / service item. I also heard switching the oil and gas caps fixes it as the oil cap bottoms out on the oil bottle... at least that was what I heard, did not try it myself.

Oil leak fix without a warranty!

There was a thread on here last week covering this same thing, that is of course if it is in fact leaking from the cap. Sorry couldn't find the link to it.

My warranty is voided due to me buying my sled in the states, I faced the same problem. Try wrapping the threads of the oil tank with plumbers tape ( Silicone tape ) in a clockwise direction. Others were making a tin foil cap to go under the lid, but over the threads, they said that worked for them.

If the oil tanks cracked thats a different story. 4 out 10 of my buddies XP rentals have had the oil tank replaced due to someone putting their knee into it and them cracking. Just something to be aware of, if it happens it does but I still wouldn't trade my XP for anything else!!

Thank you!

Im in the same boat as you. i bought my sled south of the border too, sooooo, no help from brp.

I will try the tape. I'm a plumber/gasfitter so i should hve some ;-)

The yellow or pink stuff is for use on petroleum products like gas or oil. The white stuff just falls apart.

Thank you once again. It is leaking from the cap.

I have fracture marks all over mine from hitting it with my knee.

Just got back from TOG/Jackson Hillclimb, my oil tank also has stress indications. Thought I had a leaking oil tank, found that the oil was comming from my chaincase. Top mounting boss on the chaincase for the oil tank broke out. I would have thought the plastic tab on the tank would have broke long before the magnesium case.

Yes the oil tank is warrantied due to a thread issue, but mine still leaked after being done, turns out that the seal had softened and swollen, i replaced the cap and it fixed the leaki.
