Oil question/need help

ok, so when I bought the sled (03.5 900 mountain) I asked the guy what kinda oil he has been running. at first he couldn't think of the name, he just said it was expensive good stuff, then he said "Its Klotz" I'm running. Well I just went out and bought a gallon of Klotz and I was gonna top her off but I decided to smell the oil already in the sled and look at its color just to make sure. ANyway, the oil in the sled has a very distinct Candy smell to it, actually smells really frigin good. The Klotz doesn't have that smell at all. So I guess I'm asking what kinda oil is already in there that smells sweet like candy and is it ok to start using the Klotz since I already bought a gallon?.

when it come to 2 stroke oil don't mix them if you can help it. you can pre mix the tank when you come close to the end of what is in the oil tank. just keep a quart of the new oil with you and when the old stuff is gone filler up. it will smoke more on that ride but you will avoid the gel up in the oil pump that stops oil flow to the motor.

Whats the "gel up" in the oil pump that your referring to and when would that occur?. Why would this happen?. I was thinking that when the resovoir got low I could fill er up with the new Oil and be good, is this when the "Gel up
" could occur(when the old oil runs out and the new oil starts to flow?) sorry, never heard of such a problem.

to pre mix the tank you add about 3.2 oz. of oil per gallon, you can run a sled on this without the oil injection for a few tanks without hurting the water pump gear. So if you run your oil tank dry or almost dry the motor is still getting oil at this point you can add the the new oil to the tank.
when two oils mix they can gel up(create a jelly like substance) and block the oil flow threw the pump (not all will do this but nobody can tell me the ones that gel when mixed)and this will starve the motor of oil and you will let the squeak out of the pistons.
Or just pump the tank and drain the line to the oil pump and refill with the new stuff.

hey

alright, that explained it perfectly, I understand now. The only tanks I've pre-mixed before are on my weedeater and chainsaw, just the small engines, never really thought about it on big motors. Then again my buddy pre-mixes his Banshee, I forgot about that. I'll probally just pump out old and then put in new, thanks for the explanation.:beer;

pre mixing the tank

I have a big bore kit on an 800. The engine has the hole for the oil pump blocked off so only premixing can be done. Could I use the stock 800 oil pump with the larger bore and go back to oil injected. Doesn't the oil still get into the crank case through the delivery of the fuel?

yes you can go back and use the pump and not premix the tank. But I would pre mix the first tank after you put the pump back on and mark the oil bottle. After the first ride check how much oil it used to make sure the ratio is correct before you stop using pre mix. the pump doesn't care if it is big bore or not it delivers oil in a ratio to the fuel and your fuel is set up for the needs of the motor.

The Klotz oil is compatable and will blend with petroleum oils and synthetic lubricants.
It is rare that I hear nowadays 2 oils that cause gel problems. Not like it used to be in the 70's where you couldn't mix Klotz with petroleum oils.

You could also take some of the oil out of the tank that is in there now, put it in a glass container, pour some of the Klotz in with it. Mix it up and let it sit overnight. See what happens.

Might save you a lot of work and hassel if you can just pour the Klotz right in or just run the tank low and then pour it in, but just make sure you leave about a 1/4 inch of oil on the bottom of the tank (or more) so you don't starve the sled for oil.

Personally, that is what I would do, but do what you feel most comfortable with...I am sure you paid good money for a nice sled like that!
