Oil pump failure?

2900 miles on 2011 Switchback assault. Installed Mtntk Fix kit as I started dropping a cylinder. 200 miles on new top end and it runs great. Last tank used 4 gallons of gas and 3 qts oil, tank before that 5.5 gallons and literally empty oil tank. Does the oil pump run WOT when it fails or should I be seeking another problem? Both my Pro and the assault can go through 2 tanks of fuel before needing the oil tank filled, it's only been guzzling since the new topend. Baffled.

Yes you might have lost the linkage connection somehow? Also check the spring. But it does fail to wide open when disconnected.

Double check all the oil lines have oil in there. I had the brass fitting from the main supply fall out. :face-icon-small-sho
Luckily i caught it right away because of the blood trail of oil going down the trail.

Eh maybe I'm guilty of jumping the gun lol, I'll check the linkage tomorrow. Like I said I just put a topend on it. I could have jarred the linkage, just doesn't seem like it.

At least it fails to wide open. Did you have the motor out when you did the fix kit? Or the throttle bodies?

My throttle body and oil pump are setting on my work bench. It does look like the oil pump would go "full pump" if there were a linkage problem.

I had the throttle bodies out when I changed the reeds last year chasing my dropped cylinder problem. I didn't pull them when I did the topend and I did it in the chassis, kind of why I don't think it's the linkage. I will check tomorrow though.

The arm in the pump may have spun backwards around to a failed position when you pulled your TB's? If the TB's dropped down and allowed the spring on the arm to spin it clockwise 180 degrees.
Possible...

I tore it down and found the linkage and springs all correct. The pump is stiff. The spring just isn't strong enough to return to idle. It's even stiff pushing it with my finger as I throttled up and down. Everything I've read says when the pump fails it stops squirting oil and a burndown occurs. I had a hard time believing it was bad because of that. It's cold here at home so I will take it to work Monday and tear it down in a heated shop. I'll first see if there is a reason the linkage is sticking before ordering a new pump, still not sold the pump is shot. I will update next week. Thanks for the replies!

It may have spun around on you 360' when it was last disconnected. Try spinning it in the wind up direction and reattach to the throttle body. I have had it happen before.

^^ The arm spun around. Corrected and all it good. Thanks for all that responded!!
