Oil pump adjustment??

:face-icon-small-con
There is so much conflicting information here on this. One person says align the mark at WOT, another says at idle. That's kind of a big difference. Does anyone know what the shop manual says specifically?

I just measured after a thirty mile varied ride and it's using 27-32/1. My plugs look pretty dark though not oily but there is some oily blow by where the exhaust meets the can (just siliconed it though). I let out the oil pump cable so it's now a millimeter or two beyond the line on the pump at idle. Still smokes about the same at idle.

Any definitive info out there? Sled is an '02 running Gold Plus ('cuz it was on sale)

The confussion stems from previous years when there was 2 marks. On the Edges there is only one mark, for idle. Now, I actually adjust mine a little rich on idle just because oil is cheap relatively speaking.

If you are using 27-32/1 on a varied ride it is REALLY rich. The pump is variable, starts at like 50:1 at idle and then progresses to something like 32:1 at full throttle. You wouldn't be running at full throttle for the whole ride so either the pump is either adjusted way rich or is defective... I've seen them "fail" and start injecting full ratio even at idle but they thing smoked like crazy.

The shop manual says to line the marks after taking the slack out of the throttle cable. The marks should line up just at the point when the slides start to raise. The line on the arm would be just a little on the lean side at rest (not pressing the throttle).

Appreciate that info guys. This oil pump has a line and a dot for markings. The line on the arm was lined up with the line on the body at idle from the dealer.

One thing I'm noticing is the return spring is pretty gutless. Without the engine running it won't settle back to it's minimum. Finally something positive out of all that vibration :face-icon-small-dis.

I did pretty much the same ride today (30 miles instead of 32 yesterday) but was into the throttle a little harder and only used eight ounces of oil and three gallons of gas for approx. 48/1, significantly less so I'll assume the pump is functioning OK (responds to adjustment). I hope to be pinning the throttle a lot more when we ultimately get some serious snow, so far it's been just a few seconds here and there and I'm going way too fast (we have a lot of trees)

Do you think more or less oil than 48/1 average??
Guess I didn't mention this is an '02

It is hard to figure an average on a short ride. I usually add 10 gal of fuel after riding, and use about a quart of oil (40:1). This can vary, depending on bottomless or set up conditions.

I think I'm going rich-en it back up a 1/2-3/4 of a turn on the adjusters, I'd feel comfortable around 40/1 average. As mentioned earlier, oil is cheap relatively speaking.

Thanks again!

Hey Thatspec your spring should be fine many times the cable to the oil pump frays and will get caught up and then break off on you. I have seized a motor due to the cable breaking. I caught another one right when it broke because my hood was off at the time. It's pretty common for them to break. The pump is designed so when it fails it should open up completely but the broken cable was still inside the sleeve and did not allow the pump to open up. At this point I would suggest to you to replace your throttle/oil cables before they break, it’s cheaper than new cylinders and pistons:face-icon-small-win.

X2, Ive done the same. Cost me a motor. If your pump lever is sticking, most likey your cable is shot. Replace it. Cheap insurance.

Dot or mark

My pump is lined up on the dot, i can't adjust the cable anymore to bring it back to the line. new cable from previous owner. burned almost a quart to a little less than a half a tank of gas. So seems it's rich big time. i don't mind extra oil but that seems excessive. can the arm be positioned on the shaft. this is on a 2001 700 rmk. the book says line at rest position. any ideas.
