oil on belt

long story short, oil got on my extra belt when the sled rolled upside down. the belt was never ran with the oil on it but is there a way to be sure all of the oil is off the belt before i try to run it? break cleaner? dawn dish soap? some other cleaner? or is the best shot now that there has been oil on it? moral of this story, don't assume your buddy got your oil cap on straight, even when he is trying to do you a favor.

X2, A couple of cycles through the dishwasher and high heat. Or scrub like hell with Dawn by hand.

I went through the same thing once this winter. Didn't catch it though til I had run it all day caked with oil. That expained why my clutching was off a bit that day lol. Anyway, Tossed it in the dishwasher and life was good again.

White spirits (ultra clean mineral spirits = no residue) works well and is the only solvent approved for use on belts by Dayco; apparently it doesn't penetrate the pores as much so isn't a long-term problem for belts like other solvents. Worked on mine (and I keep mine in my seat bag now, LOL). Dennis Kirk sells it as a product called PowerMadd's Belt & Clutch Cleaner (or just buy a quart from hardware store).

Have FUN!

cool. thanks for the info, that's pretty much what i was thinking. it hasn't been ran at all so it shouldn't be too hard to clean...

All belts are molded with large amounts of Oil as part of the manufacturing process. Goodyear spent millions to try and develop a way to wash the oil back out of the Kevlar fiber as this was contributing to most belt failures of the day for all the manufactures. Goodyear really never got a toe into the belt market but you really should scrub every belt with Dawn / hot water and Scotch Brite the sides and dry it before using it.

My guess is the washing technology is why belt costs have more than doubled if not tripled in the last ten years.

A nylon short bristle brush from the supermarket works well for scrubbing belts. With dishwashing soap, of course!

Hot water... simple green/purple power/spray-9 more hot water rinse...
Scrub with a stiff bristle brush..

Do this every 3rd ride, clean the clutch faces with scotchbrite (medium grit) and wipe with acetone... your clutches will be much more consistent... blow them out with compressed air after ever ride.

I always use simple green and dawn dish soap to wash my belts.. I wash em with a good brush and let dry over night... Every 3-8 rides i wash the belt
