Oil leak under the hood?

Have a buddy who has about 100 miles on his 17 Pro and he says there's oil splattered under the hood. On the right side, by the coolant bottle and up by the steering post (see pics). He says it's definitely not coolant and it's not the same black oil that leaks out of the exhaust when these things are brand new. It's got the same consistency and color and as it does right out of the jug. Any ideas?

Yeah take it to the dealer and tell them to fix it. It's under warranty man, don't even mess with it.

Was it there prior to his first ride?
Could it be a shot of spray lube to the steering ball joint that missed?
Otherwise check connections on the oil pump lines just below the coolant return line....

Looks the sled was laid on its side? Oil dripped from top of oil cap across sled onto brake disc, one driven it slung it up and around? Well if not my explanation is legit! hahahaha Ask me how I know.

No wait, please dont.

It's oil from your pull rope, mine had tons of oil on it when I first got it. It eventually went away. Pull the rope out and rub your hand on it, I bet you get oil all over your hand.

I agree with this. You will probably see it on the console where the rope comes out too. Mine did the same and has seemed to clear up now.

I know that he hasn't had the sled laid over yet, so it shouldn't be that. The recoil comment is a good one though. I have a 17 too, but haven't had a chance to do anything but load and unload when I picked it up. I'll have to check my rope later and I'll have him check his too. Thanks.

My 16 and 17 have both been like this. Oil film on the rope, air box, coolant res, jack shaft, on the consul up by the pull handle. Spray it all down with simple green and rinse off with warm water. No trip to the dealer needed! Eric

Yep SRXSRULE is correct. Lots of reports last year at the beginning of the year of this. Must be assembly line-corrosion proofing...

BRP covers their clutches in this stuff...

Thanks for the info guys, I rode Saturday and noticed the oil and was going to not go riding tomorrow because I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I searched out "oil leak” and found this thread, now I'm going.

Belt drive or chaincase? I have a 16 assault which is chaincase and I found oil inside as well I'm 98% sure mine was coming from the very short breather line off chaincase when sled was upside down so I ran a longer line into the over structure. I also ran a longer line off fuel tank vent as my sled didn't have one into the over structure like they did on the pros. Also if you still have the foam on the side panels and under hood once you clean everything under hood that foam will still retain oil and make a mess. Once I removed my foam it was soaked in oil. Just my two cents.
