Oil blowing out the exhaust!!

HI i have a 95 polaris trail with the 488 engine....I just re built the engine and i have a couple questions.. I had it running already seems to run ok when it stays running but seams to be blowing oil out the exhaust???? also I had to change the little check valve that injects the oil into the engine.. So I had replaced the little hose that connects to the check valve and the oil pump ...i left that hose off the valve for the week and when i came back oil had filled the hose...So my question is Does the engine have to be runnning for the oil to be going through the lines or does it sorta just siffen through when it is sitting?? Im jsut wondering if my oil pump is wrecked or is this normal??
