Of Beacons, Airbags, and Avalanches

Avalanche beacons are a must have tool when riding in the back country. However, a beacon is most likely going to be used to find a body, IMO. If you get buried 6' deep or deeper, you'll be dead before your buddies can find you and dig you out. The avy pack is going to be your best bet to keep you on top of the snow and allow your buddies to find you and get you out alive (barring any instances where there is blunt force trauma involved ie - hitting trees or rocks). The physics of the avy pack is such that it increases your surface area which allows you to be shuffled to the top while you and the snow are being hurled down the mountain (kinda like when you shake a bottle of mixed nuts and the big brazil nuts always come to the top).

A great read: Of Airbags, Avalungs, and Avalanches in the Toronto Star Newspaper (Jan 2008)
