Odometer Rollback?

Very easy. All they would have had to do is replace the instrument cluster. Run the VIN on carfax.com and see what it tells you. Although if the owner discloses that it's not the true mileage, then it's perfectly legal.

it may have had the speeod/odo exchanged .dealer ask for milage but does not verify it.....simple matter to say lower milage when ordered....

The owner bought it at auction 06/10/08. The mileage at auction was 40k. He's advertizing it with 28k. The carfax shows it at 40k also. Is there a way to alter the exsisting odometer? When the dealer exchanges the odometer, he puts on the exsisting mileage? How does the dealer do that without altering an odometer?

If it was me..I would call the cops and show em what ya got..sounds like he purposefully changed mileage to get more money..is very illegal....most people wouldnt look that close..and it makes you wonder what other shadey things this guy has done...

The electronic ones can't be rolled back, unless you break it and it'll roll back to 0. I'm sure there's ways to fast-forward it to some number, but I can't imagine your everyday scammer would be able to figure it out.

Dunno, if you run a carfax, see that the odo is significantly different, and the dealer tells you what it says is true.... could investigate the source on the carfax report, but i'd say the guy's a liar. Report it.

Computer

In them trucks you would need to change the computer out. He may have got a computer from a junkyard.

It sounds like it wouldn't be cost effective to buy and install new parts in order to make an extra grand, and way to easy to detect. (he11, even I found the problem) I'm betting that either the auction entered the wrong number, or he advertized the wrong number thinking of another truck. (He does move allot of outfits.) Shouldn't be hard to clear up. I'll see what he says tomorrow when I physically look at the truck. If he did do a switch, maybe it's worth a 5 grand discount to stay outa jail.:D
