)... there's only a few of the sam adams beer i truly like, octoberfest is one, black lager is another... the rest are OK but not worth writing home about... spaten is a nice one, but it is much lighter than most of the others, iirc, spaten was THE ORIGINAL octoberfest beer, it is good, but i like paulaner a bit better... when it comes to octoberfest beer i like the big malty bastages, ones that are reasonably dark with a rich thick body and very little hop flavor and only a ~slight~ hop aroma... which is why i like the sam adams octoberfest so much, it capture all the things i look for in a marzen/octoberfest style... most of the german ones, while nice and well balanced and kind of bland because of it and lack the bold flavors i enjoy out of most beers...
