Obama Admin Proposes Reduced Access for Snowmobiles in Yellowstone
By NOELLE STRAUB of Greenwire

The Obama administration is proposing to allow up to 318 snowmobiles per day into Yellowstone National Park for the next two winters, cutting by more than half the 720 allowed last winter by the Bush administration.

The move effectively restores a temporary plan that Bush officials scrapped last year after interpreting a judge's ruling as requiring the 720-per-day rule to be reinstated instead.

The National Park Service will use the next two years to come up with a long-term solution to the contentious issue, it said.

In a notice set for publication tomorrow in the Federal Register, the service says it is reopening a public comment period on a 318-per-day plan that never went into effect due to the legal controversies.

"The NPS has now determined that there is sufficient time to provide for an additional 45-day comment period to ensure that the public has had an opportunity for review and comment," the notice says.

The Park Service intends for final rules to be published by Nov. 15, to be in effect for the winter season that starts Dec. 15.

The rule would be in effect through the end of the 2010-2011 winter season. During that time, the agency said it will work with "all interested parties" to complete a new environmental impact statement, a new long-term plan and permanent regulations governing winter use in Yellowstone.

The agency said it will consider all comments on the issue received during the last public comment period in November and any received since then.

Up to 720 snowmobiles per day were allowed in Yellowstone this past winter. That controversial decision, made in December, came after months of uncertainty and changing numbers resulting from dueling lawsuits and court rulings.

Under the Bush administration, the Park Service proposed allowing 540 snowmobiles per day into the park. But a federal judge in Washington, D.C., threw out that plan in September 2008, citing the emissions and noise impacts on the park, and ordered the agency to come up with a new plan. The agency then proposed a plan early last November -- which the agency now is reopening for comments -- to allow up to 318 snowmobiles a day in Yellowstone for three winters.

But a federal judge in Wyoming, ruling on a separate lawsuit on the same issue, said the Park Service should reinstate an expired previous rule until it could put in place an acceptable new one, as ordered by the Washington judge.

The Park Service had already published an environmental assessment and a proposed rule that would have allowed the 318 limit to go into effect by Dec. 15, 2008. But the agency interpreted the Wyoming judge's ruling as an order to put that process on the back burner and instead reinstated the expired 2004 rule. That rule established a temporary, three-year plan allowing up to 720 commercially guided snowmobiles and up to 78 multipassenger snowcoaches per day. It had expired at the end of the 2006-07 winter season.

The agency said it would continue to analyze public comments received on the 318-limit plan in order to guide a long-term planning process.

At the time, the Park Service said the 720-limit rule would be in effect last winter -- and remain in effect until the Park Service promulgated an acceptable rule to take its place.

That higher limit will not be reached most days. Last winter an average of about 205 snowmobiles a day entered Yellowstone, the agency said, down from 294 a day the previous winter. The park's peak day last winter was Dec. 29, when 426 snowmobiles entered the park.

If i wasn't afraid of black helicopters and men in black suits with cords in their ear, I would personaly write Mr. NoBama and tell him to keep his @@#@$ing hands off my snowmobile rights.

What a douche bag. Lets all have national health care pot, and screw snowmobiling :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Osama is a socialist. He wants to run everything. Why can he put a limit on emissions when he flies in a jet that emits more emissions in the air in one hour than I will my whole life. Its just not right. He's a damn hypocrit. I'm sorry about my mis-spelling in his name, The "S" is so close to the "B" on my keyboard. But I Don't have time to change it.

It absolutley amazes me what a complete and total non-issue snowmobiling in Yellowstone in the winter was.

You are smoking crack after 10 hits of LSD if you believe for ONE FREAKING SECOND that snowmobiling there in the winter time caused as much "harm" to Yellowstone during the course of the entire winter as all the idiot f*cking tourists and their RV's do up there in the summer time.

If they are that god damned serious about "saving" Yellowstone then they need to ban SUMMER traffic, camping, etc, not f-cking snowmobiling.

God I f*cking hate environazis.

That is exactly right.

Like I told the greenie lady.

Where the hell can I possibly ride my snowmobile, that is guaranteed to be not apparent in the future, beside one of the world's biggest calderas?

Lady, I freaking ride in a volcano, what could I possibly hurt??????

To me it is not a shock that his approval rating is barely 37%

Regardless of the Yellowstone Snowmobile issues, there are so many more important things they should be working on for this country and the world economy. No matter what your stance on Yellowstone, as tax paying citizens you should be outraged so much time is being spent on something that will have little effect on getting this country out of the mess it is in.

Oh wait, its ok, Obama will just print more money and build Bullet Trains to save our economy

Global warming and all that mess is nothing but a lie. Its a control thing to dig deep into yours, your neighbors, and my pockets. Al Gore is nothing but a hypocrite giving his little stupid speeches on global warming, investing in how many OIL companies? All it is, is a designed method of control to put fear into the people and make someone FILTHY STINKING RICH. The sad part is that its working.

Snowmobiling in Yellow Stone

I have been to China, HongKong, Taiwan, Philippines and Mexcio.
Envoros! should see if they can go to Manila on a day where no wind and everything is diesel and every second truck or car smokes and burns so much oil that in the very hot middle of the day the street lights will stay on.
Yes believe it when I say you can hardly breathe and young people die of heart failure at age 26-27 that drive a jeepney in the open air.
The media says to their people on TV ( The greatest place to live on earth )
Street lights are on and sometimes you can't see the next one because they disapear in the polution!
I could go on about a lot of things I have seen and people live in there own little world. Guys that leave garbage and beer can on the hills have no idea how it gives the greenie guys a chance to take away your sport.
I quietly pick up beer cans and crunch them down and fill all my spaces like bottom of belly pan to take home. Then one of the guys might say to his buddy ( I guess we shouldn't leave cans laying around ) or they bury them in the snow so hikers can find them in the spring. Am I getting pissed off? Oh yes I tell them to stay the hell off the mountain and go back to where ever they came from. We see it all kinds of things all over this world if you travel and keep your eyes open you can see crazy things.
Everyone should do there part in making our planet green.
I have been watching this website in Austrailia for years as I had worked on something close to what these guys have done.
Canada still has not pass the patient licence the last time I check.
This I feel this is the future when we say enough of these wars and crap over oil energy.
The Lutec guys made deal with HongKong to have the rights to sell this to the rest of the world.
Why doesn't Obama go visit Lutec and educate himself on this product.
Link guys and sorry for going on for so long. Pass this link around and everyone work together so we can ride for many more years to come.

Do yourself a favor, and don't invest all your money in this.

Tell them to start the thing running, then connect the output back to the input, and see if it can still power the lightbulb, and for how long.

If this were true, it would be in every scientific article in the country. Finally, a super-perpetual motion machine has been created.

Ya, I think most on here do.

Global warming and all that mess is nothing but a lie. Its a control thing to dig deep into yours, your neighbors, and my pockets. Funny thing is that no one wants to look at the really big picture.
There have been ice ages in the worlds past, plural, as in more than once.
These were before Man's time on this planet and certainly before fossil fuels were used.
So what does this tell us?
It tells us that the earth has warmed and cooled with out our help.
So this boils down to clobal warming and cooling as a natural thing, a cycle.

In the mid/late 70s all the green groups were all up in arms about man causing another ice age.
Temps were dropping slightly and this was the big concern back then.

Then in the 90s and early 2,000s the same damn groups are all up in arms about man made global warming.
According to the NASA computers and info they release to the public, the temps on Mars and Venus have changed by about the same ammount as Earth. I suppose sleds are responsible for that too?

Now the ocean currents are starting to head back to a direction that makes cooling weather happen and guess what, Now they are slowly changing the verbage to global climate change.
WTF?

Gore is projected to make at least a billion dollars in the next 5 years on his carbon purchase scheme.
