Looking at a stock Nytro with a busted motor for cheap.....what would it cost to fix a nytro motor with a rod through the case? would it even pay?

By the time you get everything shipped etc I'd budget for $3000.00 till its on your bench for a motor with like a thousand miles or so bone stock. I wouldn't even think about fixing one that had grenaded that bad but I'm sure some guys would do it. Nypex man, that 3 holer is a good motor but the 4 is better and stronger. Coming from the 4 you'll miss that motor if you go to the 3. JMO.

i found a stock nytro for cheap with a punched rod and wondering if it made sense to get it to build a tnytro

Have only seen a few stock ones throw a rod:
-Rolled it over never checking the oil (ran it on low oil)
-Skid plate was rubbing on oil filter, ran out of oil
-timing chain breaks
-oil pump chain breaks

no stock ....

no oil would be about the only way, these motor are build super tough in stock form i dont see it throwing a rod unless he did something real stupid.:face-icon-small-sho
if you want a built motor it could be a starting point to save money depends on if the cyliders are damaged block can be fix, you could talk with chuck at lakeside he could give you a idea of cost.

X2. Second thing you mentioned is a real problem that is going to happen again this season, especially when people use the 2 3/4" filter. (Pin holing the filter drops oil pressure enough to take out rod bearings) That's one of the reasons I designed the skid plate I sell. Cheapest Nytro engine I've seen sell has been around $1800.....most sell for between $2500-$3000. The head is likely damaged as well. Better to start over and sell what you can from damaged engine.

X3 oil related, pretty durable engine as long as they have proper oil supply.
Center rod is usually to one to let go during an oil related failure. Another sign of an oil starvation issue would be a crankshaft throw that has turned blue, due to a lack of lubrication=excessive heat.

If you decide to repair the engine, be sure and pull the valves and chuck them up in a lathe to make sure that they are not bent.
What happens before the rod lets go, is the rod bearings fail "spun a rod bearing". The bad rod bearing will have excessive clearance and allow the piston to travel further up in the bore and contact the valves.
This can slightly bend the valve causing it to bind in the guide. If you don't catch it when the motor is put back together, the binding valve will stick or hang open at higher rpms, then the piston smacks it a few times and the head of the valve breaks off lunching your new motor in the process.
Smaller high output four stroke engines run pretty close tolerances so usually there not a lot of room for error. It's best to replace any valves in a cylinder that had a rod bearing failure.

for the money it would cost to rebuild a nytro motor I wouldn't even look at it, but if you can find a used complete motor somewhere for a good deal then it would be something to look at. Maybe buy it and find a used apex motor for it. Nypex here we come. Any biters on your apex? seen it on kijiji for a couple weeks now...
