nytro oil tank leaks????

I have a 2008 nytro and the oil tank leaks, it seams to be right at the bottom where the big fitting goes. I can see oil on one of the allen head screws, I wipe it off and it comes back, I think its right above them in one of the seams that go around the housing on the bottom. Anyone else have this happen and will the warrany cover it.

mine did the same thing. spider cracks starting from the bung outward. i think it has to do with the bung weighing like 5 pounds and the tank made out of 30 gauge steel, add some vibration and it cracks.
i tried to weld it and as the weld began to cool it would continue to crack. you could braze it maybe?? i ended buying a replacement tank and then before i put it on covered the area with jb weld to stiffen the area around the bung. crappy design imo.

I might try to braze it, sucks because the tank is almost $250. I wonder if a person could use jb weld instead of welding it or some kind of sealant all over the bottom of it. I might try to tig weld it.

Mine was leaking as well. I thought i cracked it myself working on sled. I had local welder Tig it and seems to be holding. They are very thin tanks though not a very good design from a company who usually overbuilds everything with extra weight.

same thing here...the weld that holds the fitting on the bottom cracks...common problem. Dont buy a new tank, it doesnt fix the problem.

I had mine welded, and also had a backing plate welded on the mount plate to eliminate flex...so far, 700 miles and no issues (knock on wood!!).

the issues is exagerated if you roll your sled on that side. The side panel flexes in and the weight of the sled is all on the tank.

go here if yamaha wont warrantee it.
http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com/
30% off yamaha stuff. i paid about 175 for the tank + maybe 10 to ship it.

i tried to use some silicone on it and it got me through the season but the cracks were close to 2 inches long and i think the tank gets thinner as it goes up the side. the more i welded it the higher the leak got, i finally admitted defeat and just ordered one.
the dealer said it would be covered but i had to go to denver (60 miles each x4) pulling a trailer at the time diesel was like 4.50 or so. i would have had to refill with amsoil at 7 bucks a qt. and then get it home take it off to put some jb on it to hopefully keep it from happening again. with my time it wasnt worth it to me.

i have welder a few nitro and apex
clean area with a new stainless wire weel
wipe with alcohol (not beer :face-icon-small-hap)
tig weld of lower heat more heat to the bung put in a good fillet and it will be better than new
the tank is crap aluminum so 40 series wire
hope this helps

I had mine replaced under warrantee, you guys need to notify yamaha of the problem, when I talked to my dealer yamaha said they were not aware of any problem, they still warranteed it but they need to know there,s a problem.

Thats yamahas biggest problem...there never aware of there problems....there sleds are perfect and have no issues:mad:

yeah, its like they don't even ride their own stuff??? not that every dealer doesn't say the same thing when it comes to that kinda stuff.

i also had a cracked(ing) tank.

gooped a bunch of jbweld on it, 3 layers/coats and another at the end of the season to feel safe. have not had issues since that...

y doesnt anybody make an after market tank to fix this problem another yamaha tank is gonna do the same thing unless they fixed it on the 09s im gonna make a whole new tank for mine

Mine came apart last year and I agree, do not get a new one, they are weak. I had mine brazed and then cleaned it really well and encased it with two layers of JB Weld. No more issues...ever. I would seriously encase it in JB Weld or something similar. The metal is super thin and I don't think just brazing or welding it is a permament fix.

Early last season my dealer told me to keep track of my oil tank mounting bolts as some guys had them come loose. I did so and my tank does not leak. However, I don't know if that prevented the problem or if I've just been fortunate? My short track, FX Nytro ER has 2500 hard miles and I cross country race it.
