'nother trailer Q.

Hello all.

I have a pic, sort of, of my current trailer:
IMG_1663.jpg

I took out the front board and it works well to haul my 97 rmk 700, ski's hang out the front a touch, but it tows well. This trailer has a solid 2 ton axle, no suspension, so with the sled in there I tie down unsprung parts so the sled bounces around on it's own suspension.. kinda funny to watch in the rear view.

Anyhow... I'm getting a second sled.. and that trailer only holds 1 sled.. so what I'm debating is what to do.

1. I can build a platform and winch it in to the bed of this trailer and the platform would hold a ramp, then up top of where those sides are, have a 2 spot(wide) sled deck. My only issues with this are how wide it would be (8ft) and how high up the weight would sit. Also that trailer doesn't have trailer brakes... Now I've towed 4000lbs down the highway without trailer brakes in summer conditions no prob, but I dunno how much I want to tow 3000lbs in winter conditions without brakes, with the centre of gravity being that high

2. Buy a new trailer or build one.
If I'm going to get a second trailer, because I tow with a car, and maybe in the future an SUV, I'd prefer an inline trailer.. like the deck be 4ft wide by however long I need, probably 16 -18ft.

I'm just not sure what the better option would be.

Any comments suggestions?

Thanks
Heath

Hmm page 4 no replies :P

Well I sent off e-mails to custom trailer places asking for prices...

I prices out the hardware to built one.. sitting at about $1100 with a brake controller, but that's not including the metal for the frame and whatever for the decking, or the labour to weld it. But my brother-in-law works in a trailer fabrication shop.. they just tend to do semi trailers so I'm waiting on him also for a price...

Still not sure which way to go.. modding my current trailer.. or really building an insert for my trailer would be cheapest... but I dunno.. might work for now til I can look at better options...

For $1100 you can buy a nice used 2-place trailer. One that has suspension & is made for snowmobiles. I'd do that & just keep that old one for hauling around that tank.

I looked in the local for sale mags... I can buy a new 2 place side by side for $2000, I don't remember seeing used ones.... if I did they were up in the $1500 range, but I can look again.

It's the width that bugs me... I'm using the car in the pic to tow them. So my mirrors which are tiny would be on the side of useless. I've towed a 6ft wide enclosed trailer and that was pushing it as far as mirror functionality.

That was a borrowed tank, I was making an ice rink for my neighbour.. 350gal per tank... 30 trips..... heh
I mainly haul newspapers in that trailer.. and building supplies and sleds.. and quads.. (It was originally a quad trailer, but I cut the ramps off.)

The DOT doesn't require brakes on trailers with a GVW of 3500lbs or less you can legally be up to 102 inches before over width permits are required. I have a brand new home built trailer Drive on drive off LED lighting with a used 3500lb axle 4.80 x 12 tires w/spare I would sell today for $1500 cash I am located in montana if interested email me at tcatpat@yahoo.com
Mirrors are overrated

I live in Canada, regs are different up here.

My trailer the weak spot is the couple rated for 3500lbs, I've towed alot more than that with it though.

I've also towed 4500lbs behind my car without brakes.. on dry roads, I'm not that worried, but on icey roads.... I'd rather have the brakes, even if just surge brakes.

I think our regs are the same on trailer widths... but like I said the issue is usefullness of the mirrors and other traffic.. they don't expect a car to be towing, so all I need is somebody to clip the side of a 8ft wide trailer.

Just get some boards and run the extra sled on top of the car. Strap it down and off you go. When it comes time to unload, drive it down off the hood and grab the throttle.LOL

In all seriousness, don't waste anymore money on that trailer. Look around for a used sled trailer. Maybe even a utility trailer that you could put the sleds on staggered. If you can't find one up there, look in the states.
