Zoomie, How can someone get lost in Beaver Basin in good weather? Isn't that the first big open area just off the Ellis trail behind the village/SLO ? You could hike out on the trail in half an hour and not break a sweat. Seems like there is more to the story.
The lone rider was close to the farwel mine. and had sled issues. we got it running and he rode out on his own power. The other three riders were in the big drainage that dumps into beaver basin and were 1/2 mile from the bottom when we got to them. all their sleds made it out on the drainage before we had to pull two of them out.
Every year or two, there's always someone getting stuck (I don't think "lost" is a good word since they know where they're at usually) down in one of those drainages or slopes off of Farwell, and can't turn back because of how steep it is and/or snow conditions.
That was the case in for the solo rider but the senond group was from wyoming and had never rode in that area before. It happens to everyone sooner or later but the trick is to be prepared for that situitation. both groups had fire starter, saw etc. only one had gps, cell, map, compass. Even if someone in your group has this stuff still pack yours and don't leave it in the truck. I think they did a great job in making the most of what could of been a bad situition.
