no sprark???

I just finished reuilding my motor top and bottem end and now I have no spark. Everything is conected like it should be so I am kinda confused. Electrical stuff is not my favorite and was wondering how could I test to make sure my stator is giving off power. Kinda a newbie question but I am sure someone could help with this one

What sled? Have RER? Did you get the two pick-ups swapped on the mag end? One is for reverse and one is for forward.

X2. If your electerical worked before the rebuild you did something wrong. Most likely is that the pickups are backwards. Dollars to doughnuts if you swap them around on the coils the thing will bark to life

perfect, thanks for the help i will check it out this weekend. Hopefully that is the issue. I bought the sled with a blown motor so the electrical should have still been good

Hmmm If they were switched it should still spark ,not at the correct time and wont run.would need to check into this. Not sure if second coil would cancel the spark via ECM

Ya i am getting no spark at all. Key is on, kill switch is good, and everything is hooked up in the right spot. I am thinking that the stator was gone and was hoping someone has a way to test it.

I tested everything possible when my stator died. All the half assed tests said the thing was ok, and at the end of the day it was shot. You can test the output of the regulator to see if the stator and regulator are working as a unit, but without access to an oscilloscope there is no way to test a stator. So if you aren't getting any spark at all youhave one of two problems

1) No power. Ie. Stator or regulator is not putting out required voltage/current to run the coils

2) Faulty trigger system. This one is a little more complex. You have the pickup coils mounted with the stator that sends a signal to the mpem. The mpem decides when spark is needed and sends the signal to the coil. You have one singal coil that outputs spark to both plugs at the same time. Then of course you have the hokey plug wires, and your spark plugs

I would start by testing the output of the regulator. Have someone hold a meter onto the two output wires while you pull it over (spark plugs pulled so you can give it a good spin).also check that the plug wires are pushed into the coils tight, and all connectors are locked in place (regulator, coils, mpem).

Good luck. You're gonna need it

If I recall, there are two plugs that have the same housing & are easily switched when reinstalling engine. I don't remember exactly which ones but maybe pickup coil & water temp sensor or dpm? There is also a ground wire that attaches to the coil mounting bolt, very easy to miss if you had your coil off.

try this ,on the exhaust can side ,there is a relay strapped to the frame rail coming from the tank support, kind of right in line with the carbs tap on it with something and then check for spark

I got my pickups switched when I rebuilt my motor. Spent forever messing around. Found it would make spark when pulled over backwards (by wrapping a rope around the primary). Switched the pickups and it fired up first or second pull!

thanks for all the input guys looks like i have a fun weekend ahead of me. I will keep you posted on what turns up.

the headlights don;t try to light up either

Hmmmm, I asked because there are 2 seperate sides to a stator, the ignition coil side and the lighting coil coil side. Why would both sides not be working?

I don't believe that is accurate for these sleds. Since the coils are DC excited they run off the regulator like the rest of the sled.

Yes - you are correct, I am a tard (thinking older chassis's). Thanks for the correction. I just took a peak in the wiring manual and all windings in the stator run to the VR.

Cool cool. That is an interesting point though. If the lights don't light at all when pulled over it sure sounds like a stator/regulator problem. First thing I would try is switching around the wires on the coil. If that doesn't work test the regulator for voltage. If you're lucky you have a buddy with the same machine that can loan you a regulator to try out. They are a bit expensive to guess test, but not as expensive as the stator
