no spark on RMK: long tow back to truck

Was out riding last weekend and about 30 miles from the truck my 2000 700 RMK lost all gauges/electrical and then the engine stopped a few minutes later. No spark. We checked for obvious signs of worn wiring or switches. It took 2 800s in tandem to tow me out. Now I've got a dead sled; any ideas where to start? Does anyone have the testing procedure for stator etc? What wiring can I disconnect to eliminate switch etc issues? Thanks.

I'll bet $50 its the stator. They have a tendancy to break the plate which then kills the coils.

You can unplug the kill switch and the plugs under the bar pad and that will isolate all the switches.

Get ahold of a service manual, there is a test procedure for the stator.

There is a single black or black/white wire that comes out with the other 2 sets of wires by the stator, usually under the mag carb. If you disconnect this wire, you will lose all kill/safety switches. This will isolate the ground. If you lost all gauges and lights, it is most likely the stator as others have posted.

Great suggestions above. Unplug the black/white wire as rxlrider said right at the point it comes out of the starter recoil housing. Check to be sure it hasn't rubbed against the housing and shorted out. If still no spark then it's fair to say that the stator needs replaced.

Other items that can kill your engine
1. thermister: check it by unplugging it and by using another short piece of wire, connect the two leads together that plugged into the thermister. Symptoms are that the engine will not start or run. Usually the leads get broken coming out of the top of the thermister.
2. high-low beam switch: check it by disconnecting it from the system Symptoms are that the engine runs eratically, tach is not accurate and cannot get full rpm
3. coil
4. cdi box Symptoms are that the engine suddenly and temporarily kills. But then start back up.
5. gas pump upgrade suction hose: Symptoms are that when engine gets warm from heat under the hood, the new and improved Polaris suction hose collapses at any bends that may be present. The new hose is a complete joke.
6. Stator: symptoms of a stator going bad are that while idling, the engine suddenly kills. But it restarts right away for awhile.
7. spark plug connectors They will corrode and lose contact. Replace with the personal water craft plug connectors.
8. spark plug wire The last bit of the wire will corrode and lose contact. Snip off the last 1/4" and reinstall plug connectors
9. Other electrical plugs will come lose but not appear to be lose. Zip ties can be used to snug those together.

Your problem sounds like either the stator, the thermister or the high-low beam switch. Check everything else first. Check the stator last. Used stators are not dependable. Stators only last about 3000 to 4000 miles and you don't know how many miles a used one already has. If you have an identical running sled, you can swap parts one at a time, until yours starts.
