nice little SPOT story

I've sold quite a few and this is the first instance of someone activating the 911 feature. Awesome to see it works and it's good to hear the fella in this story is going to be ok!

I have the SPOTS available on the link below and I personally carry one. They are a great piece of equipment and it adds a lot of piece of mind for my wife as she can log on and check my location when I'm out sledding!

I carry a SPOT out in the back country when I'm sledding. I have sent the OK signal more than once to my wife at home. It's nice to know the 911 works as well.

reliable?

I never read the entire story but have been carrying a spot for a few rides now and am not that happy with it. In an emergency I think it is invaluable but if you want to use it as a gps to mark some points or make a track it isn't that great. I turned the track on one day and threw it in my outside chest pocket, it should have made about 60 points that day and I got 11. The next time out I decided to send an ok message everytime I wanted to make a point to identify a landmark. The damn thing takes forever to send, I'm not going to sit still for 20 minutes for this thing to transmit. In a 911 instance you are probably stuck in a spot and can just leave the unit exposed to the sky and it will transmit and earn it's keep.

I just don't think it's meant to act as a GPS, which is how I think you're attempting to use it. I understand what you're trying to do, but I guess I just don't see why...that's not what it was designed to do.

I bought mine Saturday and will activate it tomorrow at work. I'm going to use it all week going to/from work and then on a road trip this weekend to try and get a feel for how it works and how to use it best.
