Newer CRF450r vs CRF450x for snowbike?

I have a '15r with Yeti 137" kit that I haven't ridden yet. For summer use I'd prefer the 450x. Will the X work well in the winter?

In short NO!

The 15 crf450x is down on hp quite a bit from the 15 crf450r which is 10 hp down from the 17+ crf450rx or 17+ crf450r.

A 17+ crf450RX would transform your winter and summer experience though.
(In a good way)

One of my riding partners is on a 17 RX with a CMX kit. When I ride it it feels pretty similar to my YZ 450 F 17. He’s not much of a dirtbiker and has told me it scares the **** out of him in the summer. Ha ha.

the X is a great bike. But its built for duel sport. Lower HP, wide ratio transmission. 2 things that are not great for a great snowbike. I owned an 05 and an 07 crfx as snowbikes, My friend just got an 08. Great reliable bikes with tons of accessories and spare parts. I like them, but i love EFI MX bikes!

Have an offer of 5200 on a 2018 crf450r
500 miles or so.
Anything to look for when inspecting a honda pre purchase?
Looks like a good base for a snow bike

Don't quote me on this but didn't one of the 450R years have tranny problems? I thought it was 18 but I could be totally out to lunch.

I'm thinking about the 2022 CRF 450RS as a dedicated snow bike.

Is this exactly a 2020 CRF 450R
in every detail?
Looks like great horsepower numbers, seems to be reliable. Am I missing anything? Anyone here riding one?

If you get in to the newer years - go CRF450RX. Basically an R with a bigger fuel tank and an 18" rear wheel. So that's better all around for winter and summer, unless you ride MX/SX in the summer.

I would skip the carb'd CRF450X's - they were a cool bike when they came out in 2005, but time and technology left them in the dust and Honda never did any notable upgrades to keep them up-to-date. They ran like crap in stock form for any technical riding, and feel quite heavy compared to other similar options.

I'm on a '17 CRF 450RX with a Camso kit. I love it. When others ride it, I often get comments on how smooth and torquey it is. I think some of the smooth part can be attributed to Camso. The engine runs smooth too. Camso suspension could be improved. I got the Zbroz Suspension strut and that made a bunch of difference. It seems that Camso hasn't done ANYTHING since 2019.
Back to the bike. - - I feel lucky that I got a 17 model because it includes a kick start. I think the 20, 21, 22 models got a few changes to the engine and frame. I don't know many of the details but I believe the engine and frame changes were an improvement.

Was it the 2018, 0r 2019, (CR450F) that was the HP monster? Kinda think it was 19..?
Apparently it wasn't even close for second place that year... if leaving totally stock, and set on a Honda (and only using for Snowbike) I'd suggest getting the brute?

Yeah the 2019 Honda Crf450r was the HP king on all the different motoX shootouts, As others said above starting with the 2017 they jumped up 7 or 8 hp to be on par with Yamaha/KTM/Husky. Then in 2019 they changed the ECU, Exhaust Header and pulled an extra cpl HP. All the dynos seen an extra 2/3 or more HP over all the other 2019 bikes... 2020 was very close to the just small changes from the 2019. In 2021 they changed the entire bike, including frame and engine, to make more power apparently. I have a stock 2019 CRF450r with an Aro3 Velocity it spins the track pretty damn good as long as you keep er wide open. Although sometimes in Southern BC here in the Kootenays we have some heavy wet snow, sometimes it bogs in 2nd climbing, playing with gearing or an intake might help that.....
So far so good with the Honda!

I've been looking at this too during the brainstorm of whether to buy an existing setup vs. start fresh. Seems like a truly great value. Basically the 2020 flagship model at a price lower than it was in 2020? Would love any other input from those riding the 450RS (or the 2020 450R).

I've got a 2019 450R, it has been pretty incredible the last few seasons. I haven't had any issues with it power-wise here in SW MT. Definitely a better value than a KTM/Husky/or a different new model imo. I've ridden a 2021 Sherco 450, 2017 YZ450F, and 2012 Beta 450RR, this has been my favorite by far. I still haven't ridden a TPI 300 for comparison.

Only power change was removing the oiled air filter and installing outerwear over the cage. I just got my ECU back from Tokyo Mods for a reflash, but it definitely wasn't necessary.
