Newb needs help!!!

Hey all, brand new to the forums! (and Ski Doo) I have a few questions for you guys.

I picked up an 01 Summit 700 last night. Completely stock except an MBRP can. It has lived its entire 1000 mile life at 8000 feet. Well, im at 1900 feet and I would like to ride this thing here. First thing im trying to figure out is the clutch. I have no owners manual and looking at the chart on the belt guard it says anything below 4000 feet turn the clickers to sea level. Well, looking at them all I see is 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and what appears to be some little symbol? Is this symbol looking mark on them the sea level setting?

Next question, easy one...Whats max rpm? 8k?

Lastly, and this is the one thats scaring me. It idles anywhere from 1800 to 3000rpms. When its up in the 3000 range i can flip the choke and it comes down. But when I turn the choke back off its right back up there. I did take it out tonight and put about two miles on it to see if maybe I hadnt had it warmed up good enough but unfortanatly it was 3000 again. So I sprayed starting fluid on the PTO side crank seal. No difference. Sprayed over carb boots, again, no change. Took apart the carbs, cleaned, again no change! So I let it idle for around 5 minutes and it starting going up and down, up and down all on its own. Im really just not figuring it out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Right now we have record snowfall and Im too scared to even ride my new toy :(

Well, I'm a nood also so take this information for what it is worth, I am sure someone more knowlegable will chime in here soon but....but I also just bought a 2001 SKi-Doo Summit 144... mine had an owners manual with it (part # 484-100-031). What it says about the TRA Drive Pulley Adjustment is that ...

" The drive pulley is factory calibrated to transmit engine power as a predeterminde RPM. (Maximum RPM 8000 in the 01 Summit per the specs section).

"Summit model only:
Refer to decal on pulley belt guard to adjust TRA pulley accordingly to different high altitudes"

"All models:
This adjustable drive pulley allows setting maximum engine RPM in the vehicle to maintain maximum power...
...
Each number modifies maximum engine RPM by about 200 RPM

Lower numbers decrease engine RPM in steps of 200 and higher numbers increase engine RPM in steps of 200"

Soooo, go 2 numbers lower than where it is set and you will drop your maximum RPM by 400, increase it by 2 numbers and you will increase your maximum RPM by 400.

You must adjust all three to the same number.

My owners manual also says to loosen the lock nut just enough to allow you to move the calibrated screw, do not remove it as you will drop some internal washer down into the innards.

The dot is the number 1 position and as I understand it would be the sea level position. According to what is on my sled 8000 ft should have been set at either position 3 or 4, shoot, take it to postin 2 and see if that helps you, if so, go ahead and try position 1 (the dot) which is supposed to be for under 4000ft (as I am read in my owners manual).

Don't really know about the surging but it sounds like you are at least moderatly mechanically inclined, I'd still suggest taking it to a local shop and having a good pre-season service done and tell them about the surging, pick there brains.:face-icon-small-coo

Hope this helpes,

Also check over on Doo-Talk and check the online fiche at SKi-Doo, that may have something.

The position with no # is clicker 1, 8000 rpms is good, And try reseting the idle using the thumb screw, 1800 is a good Idle speed. If you cleaned the carbs did you take the pilot jet out clean it? You say you have no Air leaks? clean the pilots and set the idle speed. If the problem persist you can richen the fuel screw a half a turn if you want to but A slightly bigger pilot jet will take care of the problem. I think they had a 15 pilot jet and 20 would take care of the high idle.

To Change the clicker remove the nut its a 10 mm and push out on the bolt just enough to turn the head of the bolt into a different number some times you might have to use a 13 mm wrench.{WHAT EVER YOU DO DO NOT REMOVE THE BOLT COMPLETY ARE PIECES WILL FALL INTO THE CLUTCH} and then reinstall the nut and remember you have to do all three.

Thanks alot guys. This info will help me greatly! I did switch my clutch to level 2 and its still over-reving a little. So tonight I will change it to setting 1. When I changed the setting there was absolutely no tension on the cam bolt. With the nut loosened (almost all the way off) I can turn the cam with ease. Is this how theyre supposed to be?

But yes when I had the carbs off I actually even let the pilot jets soak in carb cleaner and took a tiny wire and made sure there was no blockage.

Oh one more thing. This DPM thing. The little round canister located right by the boost bottle. Is there supposed to be one port left open on it? On the right side there are two larger ports. The bottom one on mine has nothing hooked up to it?!

Thanks guys,
Chris

Some times you have to use a wrench mostly when clicking up. And you are correct there is no hose on that dpm nipple.

They made two different pin sets for the TRA. Hollow and solid. I am betting you have the hollow pins in it if it was being used at 8000 feet. You can intstall set screws into the pins to add some weight or get solid pins. This will help drop your RPM some if clicker 1 doesn't do it.

My 02 700 was sloppy rich from the factory and I dropped two jet sizes to get it to run right at 8-10k feet. Check your plugs for color and make sure the guy you bought it from didn't lean it down for his elevation. The DPM will compensate for changes in elevation but if your basline is to lean you could burn it down.
