To me this comes down to childhood psychology, for decades now the schools have been telling our children it's NOT ok to fight back but instead turn & run find a teacher. That in and of itself starts the building blocks in their minds that its not ok to defend themselves & the authorities will save them from bad people. Now take those same children fast forward them to adults. Unless you as parents have rearranged those blocks they now have been told their whole life that its not ok to fight back and what does that lead to? People who are scared of their own shadows & have zero ability to get themselves out of bad situations. Hence easy PREY!!
With the average police response time of 7-10 min. I think it's foolhardy to depend on them to save your A$$ when sh*t hits the fan. My wife is only 5'1" 110 and grew up in a house where guns were bad. Since we've been together I've taught her & her son how to operate my guns with deadly precision. Why? Just like the cops I will not always be there to save them. Most of the time your best defense is one that strikes mortal fear in the aggressor. I'm not into picking fights but I'm d*mn sure my family has the tools to END them if need be.

I ride a street bike like most of those but from the get-go they were breaking every law in the DMV handbook. Both parties were wrong in the choices they made. But the bikers instigated it.
The driver should have just pulled over and let the riders on their way, but fear and a crazed, screaming wife most likely escalated him into massive panic mode and clear thinking was out the door.
If it's true that there were UC cops there then that makes it even worse and the driver has a pretty decent chance at a lawsuit against the NYPD. Had he been killed, his widow could take down the entire dept.

Or he pulls over and they end up continuing to be as$ hats and his family is in danger again. You have no idea if his wife was screaming, to even blame his wife is stupid. Stop blaming the victim, he did nothing wrong, to say he should have de-escalated the situation before it started is dumb. He is driving down the road and this group of idiots happened to be on that same road.

I watched the vid, several times. The bikers started it, but the driver did have plenty of time and several places to have stopped and let the bikers on their way. They were goading him and he did exactly what they wanted. It just went too far and people got hurt. I'm quite positive that he wasn't of sound mind and body either.

Thats some fcked up chit. Cant say that i have ever been in a situation like that....hard to say what my reaction would be until it actually happened, but pretty sure the on star button would have been pressed, and the fact that my wife and kids are with me would have given me more reason to AVOID any violence and possible future harm to them.
One thing is for sure...guns are not the answer. My wife and kids know how to shoot too. My wife and I both have a restericted firearm license and god forbid any dumbchit that breaks into my house...they will come face to face with a fully loaded benelli defender, but guns have no right in your vehicle on a day to day basis.....its just a bad idea.
