Just picked up an 08 Apex not much done to it...

Head Shim
Boondocker 28 series turbo

Stock rear suspension previous owner said he got used to it

First Turbo what do I need to know
What do I need to look for?

Its been running straight Race fuel at 18 pounds since it was set up.

What can I run with
50/50 race and 91 ???
50/50 Av gas and Race?

Gonna go for a ride soon and see what its like... no snow here so plenty of time to learn

I will let the turbo guys chime in but I think you can run 12lbs on premium pump depending on your elevation.

Best advice...be prepared to explain your perma grin!:face-icon-small-ton

Well it came with almost a full barrel of Race Fuel so trying to determine what to do moving forward!!

Its just money so my thought right now is to just buy another barrel!! LOL PERMA GRIN

Sold my snow hawk to purchase!!

You might find that it is more rideable between 12-14lbs of boost and crank it up if you are climbing. I am pretty sure you can run 50/50 up to about 15 or 16lbs with the headshim depending of elevation. I run a supercharger on mine so am not as familiar with the fuel on the turbo's.

My other 2 suggestions for riding that sled are be ready for the engine braking when you let off the gas and pay attention to the actual ground speed when your on the gas....they are fast.

the other thing to find out is the boost rang of your turbo.my mcx had a t16 only good for 16 psi before making to much heat and causing
detonation which race fuel will not stop so i went to a t19 so i could run the boost i wanted to run.

Exercise and lift weights.
The power will leave yours arms tired in no time when not accustomed to it. That way if you do get stuck it will be easier to get out and expect to have to get on stuck alone because no one can get to you.

I have a boondocker as well. Do you have the electronic boost control? I wouldn't run over 17 lbs of boost as the rods cant handle it for too long. Depending on the shim thickness I think you would be fine on pump gas up to 14 or 15 lbs. I run 110 because I have no head shim so you should be fine.

I also have the same turbo. I run mine 12-14 on straight 100LL. I don't have any internal engine work. I have gone to 16 on 100LL but I might be pushing it?????

I am going to double check something now tells me that there is no head shim!!!

I know the guy I am buying it from so will be able to get all the specifics when I pick it up...

IM EXCITED!!

Last night I didn't see it was an apex, so you may be fine with more boost...but if the turbo is a 2860 you are limited to about 18lbs of boost...the 2871 can push a little more though.

Today was first ride.... wouldnt make more than 14 no matter what I did to the boost dial... either up or down wouldnt make much difference...

AND YES ARMS TIRED IN NO TIME

stuff to know

if you are fine putting the gas in it leave it and run it.
In my opinion you will have trouble running a 2860 down to safe levels for pump fuel. you can but will end up with spongey lagy performance. you cant just turn it up and down based on fuel as you will also need to change clutching. The controller is more to adjust for elevation change once you are set up.
GET A TETHER if it doesnt have one put one on even if its a cheasy $20 one they dont like being upside down especially if running, I like the oft with the crank vent shut off, prevents the quart of oil in the motor from draining out. If you do have it upside down allow it to sit rite side up for a few minutes before starting check the oil to make sure there is some in the tank, then allow it to idle for a bit to get the oil back where it belongs..
the rear suspension will work they are super heavy and the tipped rails will make it run on the back bumper. Ice age can make flat rails for you that will help with the transfer. Plus you can plan ahead a bit and have them make the rails to fit a second suspension so you are ready for an upgrade down the road.
if you are wanting to change from race look at the shim between the clutches there should be a tag hanging out that says boondocker, cant remember what the shim measured, then try to tell if they split the gasket or put one top and one bottom, the gaskets are around 17thou. crushed makes a fair difference in compression. Split your compression is 9.4 to one with two gaskets you are down to 8.8 if I remember correct. there was a really cool and handy calc on here to figure fuel requirements and guessed power..

sory for rambling julio

better get a headshim if you wanna run lesser fuel. even with a headshim, if your running 18lbs you better add some race fuel.

Turbos and questionable fuel do not mix run straight race or Av gas and just be done with it. That is what I have done for the last 6 seasons Av gas 100% never had a problem. Ran up to 18 pounds drag racing with 2 gaskets.

Running 11 pounds on a supercharged Ape with stock engine right now.

You really should find out if it has a shim or not. I would run at least 50/50 race till you know what you have. The pistons melt real easy and ruin the cylinders real quick when things aren't right. Also you need to get ahold of the administer of the forum and get your Yamaha logo up on top.
