New to RMK Edge, need help from the gurus

Let me preface this with the fact that I know nothing about Polaris sleds, I'm a doo guy. But my bro is about to buy an 04 Vertical Edge 800 159" and I'm wondering what are the pitfalls with this sled? I know the PTO side of the crank is notorious for failure, is there anything else? suspension? top end? carbs? clutch? Any must do mods (can you tell I'm a skidoo guy yet?) Thanks guys.

go slp pipe and can. 19 42 gearing. slp flow rights. some venting on the belly pan is good for the clutches. the bolt on the bottom gear is notorious for backing out and breaking off so check that.

and a big bearing update is nice for the crank so you dont have to worry

....and boards. Stock boards on the Edge chassis "glacier" up pretty bad.

I had so many failures on the bottom gear bolt I finally drilled it out to a 3/8ths bolt size and tapped it, no more problems. The other thing to keep a close eye on is the speedo side bearing failure, happens quite a bit.

we actually drilled cross way through the bolt and used mechanics wire tied to the gear so it couldn't turn out works nicely

Sorry but the big bearing is a waste of moneyGet your case tightened up and you will be fine there. And as far as the bottom gear bolt clean the thread in the shaft and bolt add a small amount of red loctiter and do not over tighten and you will never have a problem. And i'm sorry but better boards have nothing to do with how your sled runs. But be sure and get ice scratchers

i would check that you have the updated power valves. maybe the 04 had them, but i have melted an aluminum one on an 03 and caused alot of damage and money out the pocket. stock were aluminum. updated to stainless, also made some ti ones.

Is there anything wrong with the Edges?

If you want to be nitpicky,
1. the tunnels crack underneath the foot well when you hit a rock, and also underneath the black side trim towards the tunnel tail
2. steering column is weak in 2002 and requires reinforcing
3. the crankcase doesn't have have an oil drip hole that drops excess oil down on the PTO bearing, which is usually the first to go
4. the high beam switch goes out and causes all kinds of engine problems
5. the engine rips the front engine mounts apart causing twisting of the crankcase and crankshaft failure
6. it weighs as much as a pregnant elephant
7. the tail light cuts down the available hand holds on the rear bumper to practically nothing
8. the cylinder head neatly holds enough air due to the design of the concealed fins on the bottom side, to float the sled when you attempt to sink it in a lake
9. the stock polaris tracks leave a lot of room for the after market tracks to improve upon, like the camoplast challenger which is at least 50% more efficient
10. the optimum limiter strap position does not have a factory hole to bolt it into position. With #1 position being all the way out, a hole at the 1 1/2 position is optimum.
11. and of course the cranks do not last like an arctic cat
