We have the brand new Pieps Freeride Avalanche Beacon in stock and ready to ship.

The Pieps freeride is a single antennae digitial beacon. It is about the size of a cell phone. This beacon is fairly easy to use, but not as easy as the Tracker or the Pieps DSP.

You mentioned that this isnt quite as easy to use as the DSP. Can you elaborate on that please?

Thanks

This is a single antennae beacon. The DSP is a three antennae beacon.
With the Freeride (single anteanna), you have to move the beacon around and find which direction the strongest signal is, then walk toward it. Take about 10 steps, and then check the beacon again for the direction of the strongest signal and repeat. Because it is digital, it has a distance display on it.
With the DSP and with the Tracker, the beacon tells you which way is strongest and how far away it is and is being updated and realigning the direction of the strongest signal automatically.

OK, so that is probably a bunch of mumble-jumble that doesn't make a lot of sense. The short answer is, the freeride is much cheaper and is better than not having a beacon. If you have the cash, spend it on a better beacon that is easier to use.....either the pieps or the tracker are great.

Thanks,

So is it just me or did the Pieps DSP go up in price a whole bunch from last year? I swear i paid a lot less last year...

Ya, unfortunately the Pieps DSP went way up in price (cost and retail). It's a great beacon, but I don't understand why they charge so much. Because they are imported from Germany, Pieps is blaming it on the weak dollar.
