Well here it is! I'm real proud of our state for this one. Looks real cool on my daughters Outlaw 50!:face-icon-small-dis

Ya...love the antique looking plate. Cheaper than the plate and off-road sticker that I have been buying over the years though.

I heard a little bit about this, so I am guessing that the red, white, and blue plate won't work anymore after it expires? Now I go to pure white, why didn't they make it like the new elk plate that would look sexy on the camo CanAm

I went down to get mine licensed and they told me I didnt "have" to have the plate if I wasnt going to be riding on any county roads and only a sticker would be required. The lady behind the desk wanted to argue with me about where I ride being close enough to county roads that I should get one anyway. I wasnt in any mood to deal with them (since they are always in a great mood there and so easy to work with) and I just opted to pay the extra $3 and buy the stupid plate.. They sure didnt think this plate requirement law through did they?

Well I went to get the sticker and they told me I had to have the plate. I tried to explane to the lady that the tag was for a 50 cc for my daughter but she wasn't hearing it. So I paid for the plate and head home to install it.

When I got home and read the rules, they say you have to be a licensed driver to operate the atv with the plate on the county roads. Thats fine but my 6 year old will more that likely not be riding this outlaw 50 when she get her drivers license. In 9 more years!!

Like I said, they gave me a hard time about it also.. maybe they get commision for upselling the plates:D

If the vehicle with the plate on it must be operated by a licensed driver than why would they even offer it for an atv smaller than 200cc's? Nobody under the age of 15-16 would ride anything smaller than that.. I dont know about anywhere else, but my experience with the DMV's here in Idaho is a horrible experience every time I walk through the doors..They are always pissed off and very un-pleasant.. This whole plate situation is a joke.. I can put up with it this year, but I am sure it will be gone next year.. Maybe I missed something, but I dont remember getting a choice in this matter.. I only heard about it after the law was in place..

DMV sucks here. The stools they sit on behind the counter must be pointed or something. Their always so PO'ed.

Now that I live in a small county, it's a much better experience. Their the first ones to crack a joke about how stupid everything is.

the way i understood it, is if you are going to operate the atv on any kind of road. county, forest service, blm etc you need the plate. and to operate on any of these roads you need the plate, drivers licences and proof of insurance on the you while operating on any kind of road. So basically anyone with out a drivers license could not operate an atv on a forest service road. The state is treating an atv like a truck on the roads. and an atv like an ohv off of the roads or on ohv trails.

i think this has something to do with the advent of the side by sides. You can operate the side by sides on roads but not trails. The side by sides are to wide to legally ride them on ohv trails.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with the exception that if a road is not maintained it doesn't require the drivers licence and proof of insurance. I will let you know what it costs when i get cited for letting my daughter ride from camp to the closest trail as we have done sense i was on my first 50 :(
A lot of it is coming from ATV on closed trails and making it easy to identify them with a plate the insurance is coming from when you do damage in a closed area or off trail there can be a claim filed for restoration of said area at least that's the way the ranger explained it to me when i asked. You will also see more and more trails disappearing over the next year

I heard the driver's license and insurance and plate where a compromise between the state and Forest Service. Forest Service wanted to treat all roads as Federal property, outside the jurisdiction of the state. For example, they wanted helmets to be manditory, even though state law doesn't require one. But, the state fought it. Lots of greenie groups are asking for big license plates on all OHVs. They want to sit on a hill top, and write plate numbers down, for various infractions. As I found out, there's no penalty for filing a false report with the forest service. They wouldn't tell me who complained about us, but unfortunately for them, not many people ride in the wilderness, with their luggage. So, our story about going to the cabin held water. I'd like to know who lied about us, but when your a greenie, you can't commit a sin.

You can see the bigger picture. No kids on forest service roads. Break trails up, too the point that you have to travel down a forest service road. This breaks up the family ridies, and you reduce usage. Kinda follows the outlawing kids motorcycles and such, doesn't it.

Sleds will be next.

we had to buy plates for both atvs and dirtbikes. they told us to bend are rear fenders on the dirtbikes for better installation and so it could be seen. but we did buy them but just wire tied them to the frame. if they try and give me a ticket they can shove it!

OK, so since this thread was created, I brought up a lot of these questions to the State Park and Rec. They now have a pamphlet out, that describes the rules.

http://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/assets/content/docs/OHV/IDAHO_OHV_2009.pdf

I'd follow it, print off a copy, and ram it down an officers throat if he jumps you. But, be careful, if your driving down a road, and cross the magic line, you may find yourself going from a county road, to a FS road, and nothing marks the transition.

They are very aware of the confusion. And, I brought up the BS about children's motorcycles/atv plate. They said, if your legal, and riding with a child, and your in control of him, he is riding under you. The pamphlet doesn't cover it. They also said, a child's ATV / Motorcycle doesn't need a plate. But, several people in the room complained that they were forced to buy a plate. Sounds like a total cluster to me. But, the IDPR isn't out to stop families from riding. I would call IDPR and ask them, and ask them where you can get this in writing.

Now, there is another bunch of BS going on, where the forest service is trying to get more forest service roads closed. Watch out for that one.

If it makes you guys feel any better. When i go to the DMV i have to wait about 2 hrs at least. Before i get to talk to some robot drone pissed off fat chick , and she tells me why i cant get plates and i have to come back .

You guys have it So good. You dont know what you got ,till it's gone.:musicnote:

It may be better than what you have to deal with, but there is still nothing GOOD about it.. The wait usually isnt long, but there there is still the pissed off fatty "drone" behind the counter just like you experience..

Sh*t like this is why i'm done buying licences and stickers. All they do is take your money. Nothing is ever maitnained so what are you paying for? Every year they close more and more and we just have to buy more and more. No more of my toys will ever be licenced or have a sticker

I couldnt agree with you more.. you are 100% right on this, but the only problem is the ticket/fine for not having a registered vehicle will cost a lot more than the sticker. They should make the registration stickers into graphic kits. That way your money at least goes towards something useful ;)
