New helmet suggestions and a SPOT

hey all, looking to potentially upgrade my helmet. Currently have a Fly F2 carbon and while I like it it's also a bit on the bulky side I think, so looking for other suggestions. Weight is imporant!

Also looking to grab a SPOT unit for this season and wondering which unit most are running?

The Motorfist carbon helmet is very light and not bulky at all. It's 30% smaller in total size compared to almost any other helmet. And the impact technology is amazing on it. Only downfall it's the most uncomfortable helmet I've ever put on. Not enough padding inside, and its shape is too round. Needs to be more of an oval shape to correctly fit a persons head. I found myself putting back on my Airoh Aviator at the end of the season. Just as light, but is bigger in overall size. So the pendulum effect makes it feel heavier swinging your head around. The Airoh is very comfortable, but not as good impact design as the Motorfist.

The spot 3 is the latest and greatest, but still lacks some basic features I think it needs. Like an audible beep to let you know it went through. I have a spot 1 still and it's pretty annoying sitting there staring at it until the send light goes through. The Inreach is a pretty sweet unit. 2 way texting and a ton of other features. Much better technology than the spot. But it is more expensive up front, and for the annual service. Little bigger in size too. The Inreach works off the Iridium network like Sat phones, so it will work better in northern regions like AK and Sweden over the spot. Spot uses their own type of network. Seems reliable enough, but have had some OK messages say they went through only to see they never actually made it to the people on my text/email list once I got off the mountain. The spot interface on their website is junk too, and people have a battle with their company when they try to cancel their service if they have you under their auto renewal plan.

If I were to buy one right now I'd either get an Inreach, or wait for the Spot 4 to come out (who knows when though). The spot 4 better have 2 way texting or they can start kissing their sales goodbye

from what I've seen, it seems there are two different head shapes that helmets are made for. I think I fall into that more oval shape. I've had O'neal, Fox (V3), FXR (blade shell), and Shoei that have all fit me well. Troy Lee Designs and the FXR X-1 shell design are more compact and do not fit my head very well.

My Shoei is hands down my favorite. Most comfortable, best venting, and I like that it has emergency release cheek pads for EMS to get the helmet off if they need to someday. It's been my MX and sled helmet for the last several years, and that is what I will personally buy from here on out. I did win a FXR last year and used it for a dedicated sledding helmet last season. It's not quite as comfortable as my Shoei, but is 1/2 the price. The quick release chin strap is pretty awesome though.

I have an older generation Spot and it still works just fine. It uses 3 AAA batteries and I see the new ones use 4. I still get a full season of use on one set of batteries though.

I picked up an inReach last season and I really like it. I didn't even consider a SPOT due to lack of two way. I shopped sat phones and decided texting would be ok for me.

I've run bell, sixsixone, fox v3, and one industires trooper helmets over the years and my favorite is the One Industries trooper. Light weight and super comfortable. And held up to a few seasons of mx before it broke while saving my head in a crash. Not as much of a known brand but worth looking into.

I have a spot 2 I would sell. Pm me if interested. Works fine
