Hey guys, My name is Scott just joined the forum a few weeks ago. I rented a sled a few weeks back and went out with some friends and had a blast. I am now looking into getting one and wanted some opinions/options on a decent beginner sled. I am looking to spend probably around 4k. Until i get one i am just going to keep renting, I will have to see if i can tag along with some of you guys next time i get one.

Thanks

I think if you could get into a 2007 or 08 M8 with a 153 around that price would be a great beginner sled. There super reliable and should have plenty of power for you as a newbie. The 06 rev was the best sled in that chassis from Doo IMO and I would also lean that way as well. Stock the rev will run little better then the Cat but the Cats are bullet proof!! pull the rope and go, some Doo's can be a pain but some can be a pull and go sled to.

If you look into Polaris I would say look at the 700 dragons, another great sled for a rookie and has plenty of power even though it's only a 700.

If you ever up Logan way I don't mind taking someone who is new to the sport out and showing them a few pointers that can make the difference in loving this sport and hating it. :D

Welcome to the Forum, Sport, etc. You have just cost yourself A LOT of money and stress!!

But the times you get to the top of the mountain, memories with friends and family, the powder shots, adrenaline, and all else make it worth it.

Beginner is a relative word because some ride at a "beginner" level even if they have ridden for years, and others can ride at a fairly advanced level only after 1 season. It all depends on how aggressive you get and how well you get to know your sled.

My suggestion would be, that if you are renting even 1 or 2 times more this year that you rent something different and see what feels most natural to you.
Try a Cat 8 or M7 that will likely be in your price range, a dragon polaris, 800,700, or I would even throw in the 600 if you are an average size guy. I have 2 buddies that ride 2007 600HO RMK's and those things rip and are bullet proof like mentioned. So are the 7's. A Doo XP also and see what you like before you pony up the money.

Good Luck! If you zero in on a sled or brand there will be many to offer advice about tips n tricks and what to watch out for on which brands and models. Just ask!

That is great advice I could not agree more. Try each one for a day and then decide. One quick ride up a hill in no way to decide on a $4000 sled. They all are great sleds or they would not be around.

TAKE ME!! TAKE ME!!! :face-icon-small-hap

5 years on an M7 and still running strong... Best begginer sled IMO... Get something your going to grow into not grow out off...
:welcome:

05 or 06 M7. Not the best trail sled but if you want to boondock there just isn't anything better. I have had my M7 since 2005 just cant sell it. It's been my back up sled for 4 years but someone seems to ride it every weekend.

Welcome to the forum. Some great advice has already been given. I would also suggest buying in April or May to give yourself a little more leverage. You should be able to get a better price then rather than in November or December.

Thanks guys, I am going to try and rent a sled next weekend. Hopefully we get the storm they are saying we should get Thursday. I will post closer to then and see if i can tag along with someone.

Anyone know of a good place to rent from?

Give Adam a call for your Polaris rental out of Heber. We rented from him this winter and will Rent from him next month for a couple of days. He only has the 600 2011 RMKs with a 155' track. This is good for you becuase it is in the IQ chassis, vs. the 800 2011 RMKs are in a new chasis. For the $4,000 you were want to put out for a snowmobile you may be able to pick up a polaris with this same chasis as you can rent from Adam. From what I have read it sounds like guys that swing a leg over the new polaris chassis they want one. So, it sounds like you don't want to be dispointed by renting the 800 2011 RMK, and then end up with an older version. Also, you will save some money in renting the 600's. They are a great sled! Also, from what I have read I would be causious in buying an 800 RMK. The motors seem to be a problem. From what was listed in this thread is that the 600 is bullet proof. I have also read good reports on the 700 in the from forum members. I personally would feel more comfortable buying a 600 for reliablility. I would ask the forum members if my concern for reliablility between the 700's and 800's is necessary. If you are interested Adam also has 2011 600 skidoos to rent.

You've found an awesome sport! Good luck with finding a sled you like!
