New Guy Needs Help

Hey so were finally getting our first good snow up here in Valdez, AK. This is my first setup, 2013 MH on a 2007 YZ450f. Took out for a ride and got about an hour or so into it and filled up airbox with snow and appeared carb was iced over. Seemed like it was running cold and found a light grey goopy fluid in end of breather tube after getting home. I realize there are threads on this but I am looking for possible solutions/quick fixes from people with the same bike or issues. For now I am running the outerwears over a no oiled filter with stock air box. Will attempt to seal holes with extra pre filter material and plug up cracks with sealant. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And after my first ride I have to say I am stoked about this setup and cant wait to get some more riding in this weekend. Cant wait for the new ski either:)

Grey goop, for me, was always attributed to the crankcase not getting warm enough and not allowing water vapor to dissipate. The grey froth is the water and oil mix that gets beat up into a foam and it can sometimes get so bad that it backs up into the airbox.

Number one thing you need to do is add a thermostat. KTM sells a 70C in-line thermostat that we have found works well. Also... make sure to give the bike a little time to warm up before pulling WOT on a cold day.

Second thing is to remove the airbox and go with a snorkel set up. No matter how hard you try to seal your airbox, it will fill with snow.

I spent a small fortune on pre-filter, caulk and hot glue at the start of last winter. Finally I just took the airbox off and put a pod filter on, problem solved.

Carb icing will still be a problem though, others can offer input on that.

Help

I have been supporting the one ski world for 6 years now and just listed both of these items on my eBay store. We are testing some engine blankets this weekend too and If they keep the engines warmer will get some more made up and for sale. Happy ride

cold powder

for the next quick trip in cold deep powder, cover all of the right hand radiator and about 2/3 of the left radiator, any kind of plastic coated paper or thin plastic will do, just keep and eye on temps, another quick fix, take a flat sheet of plastic and make a wide big skid pan from back of engine up to the radiator, about 2" wider than cases, keeping all that powder off the motor is huge for making some heat. $10 flat plastic ACE hdw sled was cut down for a freind on first trip to fresh cold powder, worked great till it ripped off on too mch brush and tree riding three or four rides later.

Just out of curiosity, do you have, or plan to make a pod filter set up with a MAF sensor built in for injected bikes?

Nope

We have just been using stock sensor and drilling a small hole into silicone intake and screwing down. Works fine it seems so far

Thank you guys for all the replies, I have started my tinkering and seems that completely getting rid of airbox is the first thing to do. I will start with that. I really wish I would have known about all the extra work to put in on these things before they are really ready to take out in the back country. Oh well gives me something to do while its raining outside, which is the current weather conditons here in the snow capitol of North America. :face-icon-small-dis

The Sensor doesn't have to be mounted to anything, or even in the airstream. It is a temperature sensor and the temp on both sides of the intake are nearly identical. Other bikes, like the WR450F have the IAT sensor mounted to the subframe. It's not a maf sensor.

Had the same bike last year and what worked best was to really seal off under the seat using some foam with self adhesive tape. Once I got the rear fender sealed up air box never had another problem.

also, DONT put a foam filter w/ prefilter for a pod setup, just a wire frame and the prefilter. havent had issues yet in the warmer snow, but was 0F riding yesterday and the snow was super fine, and would get through and plugged the foam filter and iced up really bad, bike was running like POOP and getting worse as the day went on, the filter was soaked when i took it out in the heated shop.

Ya my first day of subzero snobiking today uggghhhh what a icy mess -20 at park lot tried to start her first off took 30 min to get started. Brake iced up several times and became useless. Pre filter iced up several times and had to be cleaned and kept going rich. Got home tried to start to ride off trailer throttle frozen choke frozen no start ughhh. Had fun riding but these problems could cause a person to be stranded maybe have to stay home on subzero days.

So really I should just be able to cover some of the radiators to keep the engine a little warmer and switch to a prefilter snorkel setup and be pretty good to go? I dont think I have had many carb icing issues actually now that I think about it, we are normally around 25 degrees around where I am riding. I just wish I could tell how warm my the motor is running, I am also thinking about wrapping header pipe, mostly to avoid burning pants and keep bike a little warmer.

I wrapped my pipe and am going to block off part of the rads. I think I'm going to get a trail tech digital temp gauge that has an inline coolant coupler to tell how hot my bike is. They are only like $40.

Also I'm just running a prefilter over a cage. Hope it works out well...

That exhaust wrap stuff. header wrap or whatever. Like strap material 2" wide wrapped and then wrapped safety wire on it to hold it solid...
