So im looking for a new gun for hunting out west, looking for a long range gun. My thoughts are a 7mm or 300, Ive had a few guys tell me a 7mm ultra mag would be best. Whats everyone else thoughts on the situation?

This one works well for me. The ammo is kinda hard to come by sometimes though..

7mm rem mag is what I use, and really like it.

Got a Savage 16/116 trophy hunter package. Got it for $488. Sold the 3-9x40 scope for $130, and replaced it with a Nikon 4-12x40 BDC for $170. :) $528, and couldn't be happier.

Shoots awesome (accu trigger is very nice) great rifle, and love the newer nikons with the BDC/spot-on programs!

300wm, or even 308 would be decent caliber as well. 300 is too much for free shooting to me, just can't be accurate enough with the recoil (for me), and I prefer the 7mm mag over a 308

Be versatile go 300 Ultra Mag. it covers all ens of the spectrum from Deer to Grizzly. from 30 yds to 1000 yds with good optics. And the knockdown power is very desirable. Little bit hard on the shoulder at the range but a muzzle brake can fix that. Cheers :)

True, a good muzzle break goes a long ways!

I like my 7mm rem mag for elk hunting out here, but thinking of getting something smaller like a .243 for deer. Right now I prefer my 30-30 for deer over my 7mm provided I can get close enough. The 7mm is hard to beat though for an all around big game gun.

In reality though it doesn't really matter which latest and greatest sniper round you've got, you're gonna miss or gut shoot the big bull at 600 yards. It's better to practice shooting with whichever round you have, and learn how to hunt so you can get within a couple hundred yards.

I like my 270 wsm but i think the 300 wsm would be the best all around cartridge out there.

however the 7mm rem mag is making a come back in the long range hunting world.

Could always go with a .338 lapua mag. :)

A guy in my group hunts with a weatherby .338-378, it's a bear of a gun, but is very effective!

I'm partial to Savage, but their 111 long range hunter .338 lapua would be an excellent choice if your up for a 13# 26" rifle to lug around. As well as pay to equip it with an effective scope.

The 11/111 also comes in 300's, 308, 7mm...

Howa also makes some very nice affordable rifles. Their actions are great...

one thing to think about it is, is it legal. The gun that was put up would be illegal to hunt in idaho. Idaho has a weight limit on its guns. Basically so no one would sit on a mountain top and blast elk a mile away.

Did some looking at to what style and brands would suit me best. The guy helping me said both calibers were good, but then he threw in the question "have u every thought of a 284 ccaliber" I personally havnt heard much of them. There are a custom built gun so yea alittle more pricey, but he said as far as accuracey be hard to find anything better. Kind of got me thinking, maybe....

Anyone every had experience with them, Pros/Cons

284 is 7mm. I have many hunting rifles but in my opinion the 30 caliber is best all around caliber. Will take any game in north america and capable of great long range kills. 300 win with a high ballistic coefficient bullet will reach along way! Berger bullets been very good for me. Also nosler has some new long range accubonds coming out that should work great!

Pick what ever caliber sounds good to you at the time. Then take it out and shoot the living crap out of it. Don't abuse it but shoot everthing from field mice at your feet to targets out to 600yrds. Once you get use to where it shoots you will be better off then getting some "custom" rifle. Best to buy something you can find ammo for on the store shelf for when you forget the bullets at home. If you don't reload pick a shelf ammo and stay with it. I used to shoot everything with the 300 rum and last year I picked up a 270wsm and it is my new favorite caliber. Took two elk with it last year shooting 130g bullets. Almost on the lower end of what I would use to take elk but it surprised the heck out of me for sure. The bull was 460yrds so I held high and it hit high. Hit him in the spine and dropped in his tracks. Hit the cow in the lungs and I found the bullet between the meat and the hide on the exit side. I watched a bull drop with one shot from a 243 last year from over 300yrds, I wouldn't recomend that small of a caliber for elk but he shoots the gun every weekend on the farm and knows where it hits.

I shoot a Tika t3 lite in 30-06 and love it. Iput a very nice leupold 4x12 on it and with my loads it will shoot as far as I need it too and still has enough knock down to get the job done.:D On the plus side it is extremely lite in the weight department so it makes those long walks a little less noticeable.
