New 900 owner

Recently bought a 05' 900 159". The previous owner has done quite a bit with the sled however he has never messed with the motor. I have been on quite a few rides with it this season and love it. I want to make it last. It has 1800 miles on it and runs great, the only thing it does do wrong is engage pretty hard unless you ease into the throttle. If you just hammer it, it kind of clunks when it starts to move. Was wondering if it could be something as simple as a streched belt. The belt is on the verge of being out of spec. It has the original motor mounts. I did notice that the rubber tip on the end of the torque stop is shot. Does the motor have to be pulled to replace that? Maybe I should order the compfusion mounts and check everything. Any help would be appreciated. It has a green with pink spring in the clutch and I run between 9,000 to 13,000 feet, not sure if that is the right spring. Has v force reeds, slp intake, tons of vents.

The torque stop can be replaced pretty easy, it's attatched to the brace in the engine compartment and you can pull the whole brace off or pull your clutch. Mine cracked too, they don't last very long. As for the clunk you hear I would get the clutchs serviced. My motor mounts were cracking and needed to be replaced around the same time so you probably need new ones.

Is there any way to tell if motor mounts are bad without pulling motor? Did you put in compfusion mounts?

no there is not..

the tell all of front mount issues is excessive clutch heat, blown belts, the torque stops smashed againist the motor..

its worth pulling the motor to check them...they will always visually look good, you have to stick them in a vise and pull down with a screw driver inside the hole...they will be cracked inside most likely..

order the 06 motor mounts AT A MINIMUM..

however the compfusion motor mounts are truely a work of art and extremely recommended in ANY case..

check your clutch for ANY wear...broken spring, sticky rollers, bad bushings ect ect....

the green/pink spring is ok..but it has a higher engagement..i used it and prefer the blue/pink...same finsih rate, but lower engagement..

assure the primary is torqued to 96ft lbs as well..

Does anyone make torque stop with better rubber on the end of it? and where does the SLP torque stop go?
So on the clutch springs the lower the first number the sooner they engage? What is the disadvantage of having the spring engage to early like the black/pink?
Sorry so many questions.

Is it easier on the motor mounts to have a clutch spring that engages sooner at lower rpm so that the motor has less power at the lower rpm? How does altitude effect clutch springs?

Altitude effects power output of the engine..... that is what will determine what spring you use.
I would go through your clutches and put new springs in both the primary and secondary.
Definetly put a new 115 belt on there that will be a big improvement.

Once you go through your clutches and put a new belt on there then you will know what you want to do next.

Chain tension? My machine was making a clunking noises while hitting the gas a few weeks ago. It turning out that my tension bolt had backed out and my chain was loose. I may put a bit of locktite on it since i am working on the machine again replacing my tb.

There should be a locknut that works great on the chain tensioner bolt...I've never had a need for loctite on any sled including the 900 with the vibration. Others may have a different opinion.

The team clutch tends to make some noise (little clunk) when it engages so that might be what you're hearing.

Thanks for all the help. I will definately get a new belt. Do the expensive ones I hear about strech less? I will also check the chain tension, I have not done that yet. It has the original 05' pistons but good compression, could they break at any time?

The 115 belt will last a lot longer than the 080. On the pistons you don't want to drop a skirt it will most likely take out your crank case, so the 06 pistons are something you should think about. I'd pull the y- pipe and see how the pistons look first and go from there, maybe post a pic and get some advice from a few guy's. Since you just bought it maybe take care of the clutchs and mounts, if the pistons look good run it another season.

Why does everyone seem to go with 06' pistons and not use aftermarket like Wiseco or somebody else?

The aftermarket pistons were a copy of the 05 pistons from what I remember. So it's best to go with the Polaris 06 pistons. You can pick up a piston kit from Babbittsonline for a pretty good price.

If you pull your motor and are going to change the pistons also consider the upgraded crank kit, it's a larger pto end and comes with a new primary clutch, seals, gaskets, 115 belt, clutch bolt, after your rebuild you could sell your crank and recover some of the cost of the kit.

Isnt it a bit costy to buy the new cranck kit if the old one still works?

Like I said above,if he rebuilds the top end it's just something to consider. For 860.00 you get a new upgraded crank, new primary clutch, clutch bolt, all gaskets and seals plus a new 115 belt. Then he can sell his old crank and clutch and recover about half the cost ( I sold my 06 crank for 350).

Another way to look at it. Take a gamble and do nothing and it could hold up just fine. But if a piston skirt drops he has a 900 that needs an engine cases and all. Now the sled would be worth maybe a grand to the right person. Better off to part it out and haul the rest to the dump.
