nelson- baldface area?

hi guys. i live in castlegar and mostly ride the areas around here, but with the redbull supernatural event coming up at the baldface lodge, it's got me wondering if there is any sledding up around there? i know the cat ski ops and sledders don't normally get along, but i wanna go up and watch the event, and it would be nice to take the sled and get in a little riding along the way. anything up there that they don't mind us riding on?

To the best of my knowledge, you can't sled into Baldface until after it closes up for the season which is beginning of April if memory serves me. Also (again, if memory serves me).....there is something goofy with a large portion of the main road to Baldface from roughly December to April....I believe it is closed with gates for wildlife reasons during that time. The Baldface crew uses heli's and a different boat-access only road that starts on private property in the winter time. Honestly tho....it might be worth a call to them and asking if you have your sled for getting in/out if there is anyway to come watch....you never know.

Before/after closing they are cool with sleds up there, lots of people go and it is NICE up there. The guys from the lodge are always great....a few years back they showed us around the lodge and came out sledding for the afternoon. I wish they would open up the lodge for sledding for a month or 2 after ski season is done, that would be pimp.

thanks jay. looks awesome up there. i've been checking it out alot on google earth, and spotted the road that leads right there, but had no idea about the wildlife gates. i've been talking to one of the dudes from the lodge on facebook, and he seems pretty cool. they are still formulating a plan on whether/how to open the event up to the public. he definitely didn't say NO to the idea of me riding up on my sled, so i've got my fingers crossed.

one thing i know is that they are gonna be bringing a lot of equipment up there for the event- a bunch of it being rented from my buddy at united rentals. pretty sure they told him that the stuff would be brought up by snow cat, so there must be some kind of road... i'll have to do some more digging.

That's cool....the wildlife thing is just in the back of my head that may or may not be accurate. There is a gate right off the highway, whether it's closed or not...not sure. I know for sure they (Baldface) used to boat guests/equipment across from town to link up with a different cat road when they couldn't heli in.

The guys from the lodge are generally pretty cool....so that's encouraging to hear it's not a complete NO haha. I've got a few friends who are kind of in that scene, I'll ask around a bit. If I hear anything good I'll let ya know....let me know if you hear anything too, that would be awesome. Would be really fun to go watch, bring the girlfriend, drink beer, etc.

will do!

i also have a really huge collection of vintage snowboards, and i've got a few i wanna bring up and hopefully get autographed by the legends that rode them!

got this email from baldface today:

Thanks for the email and WOW what an impressive collection of boards you have. Unfortunately the Supernatural is a private VIP Red Bull event and will not be accessible to spectators. However there will be plenty of in town stuff going on around it so stay tuned. Red Bull has a PR/Media coordinator that will handling getting this information out to the general public.

still working on finding a backdoor into the event...

maybe you would have had better luck if you spoke to the locals rather than broadcasting it on largest snowmobile forum on the net. they wont allow you because its never just one. its you, your three friends, theyre dog, and children, and some of the 150 people who have viewed this thread.

As for vintage i really doubt there will be any vintage rider as its a new school event and terje haakonsen will probably be the oldest rider.

maybe you should consider calling baldface and asking to volunteer or help with the event instead of emailing them and asking them to sneak into their tenure and invade a corporate sponsored event that will be broadcasted on NBC.

well aren't you just mister negative?

the above email DID come from baldface directly. i've spoken with people from baldface and redbull, and have been turned down by both for volunteering duty (my first avenue).

already told them i'd be going up on my own, uninvited. and yes, i probably will be on my own since the event probably will take place mid week, and i don't have any riding partners that have weekdays off. i don't see the members of snowest rallying together for this one... doubt that the majority even care.

as for old time riders- terje, tom burt, bryan iguchi, devun walsh, and i also have a board for travis to sign. could even be more.

Ah ya..... comments like this SMP, will make more people look at this thread now.

Good to see RedBull doing some stuff in the area great place to hoast an event! The Art of Flight Just an absolute wicked boarding movie, makes your jaw drop! Too bad about the avy conditions when they filmed in the Nelson area. The helicopter pilots they fit right in with them all, balls of steel.:face-icon-small-sho If you have not seen it, hint Blu-Ray and crank it up!
