Needing help

Ok I have an 03 edge 800. I was doing some work on it this afternoon and found something weird. When I pulled out the thermostat i found this little pin lodged in the thermostat. The other day my buddy borrowed my sled and it overheated on him. He said he was just cruising down the trail taking it easy on it when this happened. After I put it back together I took it for a ride up and down my street and within 10 minutes it overheated again. I'll try and attach a picture of the pin. Any help would be great.

kinda looks like the impeller pin

Waterpump belt is new and the t-stat is working. I through it it some boiling water and it was working fine. I ran it again and the rear cooler and rails weren't getting warm. I guess I'll pull the water pump and see if it checks out.

If you pull the hose that goes into the back of the waterpump you can stick your finger in there and feel the impeller to see if it spins. Pull it over slow (don't hurt your finger). If the impeller pin is broken then the impeller is probably in pieces or has fallen off, you should be able to spin it. If it is not the impeller then you should pull off the pull start housing and spin the gear that the belt rides on. Those are pressed on and I have had 2 of them spin out on me. It is an aluminum gear with inner splines and it is pressed on to the steel shaft. You will be able to feel if the bearings are good on that shaft, because sometimes they can lock up too. And if that is the case then your not pumping oil -- the oiler is hooked to the end of the water pump shaft.

Gut an old thermostat and run it without it, your sled will run more consistantly and won't run hot anymore. Thermostats are for those that don't properly warm up their sleds before taking off.
And if the waterpump is not pumping then the oiler won't pump and your engine will seize up before overheating.

Well i pulled the t-stat out again and it was bad and that pin was the center pin. I guess it was a fluke that it worked when i put it in boiling water. I gutted it and replaced it. We will see how it runs without it. Thanks for the ideas.
