Needed, RT expert advice!

A riding buddy of mine has an '05 RT and he's got a problem with it that I'm trying to help him resolve.

He added a half of a tank of fresh gas (topped it off) to the old gas from last season

He went riding a week ago and after a short putt around the cabin and neighborhood it just died as though he shut it off.

He pulled the starter and it fired up but only ran for about 5 seconds and died again with the engine light flashing.

This happened about 5 more times, only starting and running for about 5 seconds each time.

He says that he has had all the dealer upgrades when he bought it new in '07 (hold-over) to the sled as far as reflash or whatever you call it.!

Someone told him it might be the fuel pump?

How can he diagnose this or does he need to get it to a dealer?

Is this a common issue with this sled? have any of you heard of this happening a lot with the RT?

He needs some advice, and please don't just tell him to buy a different sled!:D

Fill the tank to the top, if it runs normally, replace the low pressure pump located under the engine.

He and I talked about the idea that this might be the problem.

Then we looked up the shop hours for the job and got a little intimidated!

If filling the tank will keep it running which would point to the low pressure pump being the problem, would it be possible to access the hoses going to the pump, add to the length of them and install a new pump somewhere where it is accessible and just leave the old pump under the engine since the access to it is what's scaring him from replacing it?

I know it sounds kind of petty to a person with the skills to remove and replace a motor in a few hours but neither of us is really excited about that little prospect!

We also don't have access to a great shop to do that kind of complete tear down.

Thanks for the speedy reply BTW!

Is this a common problem?

If it is the low pressure pump that needs to be changed,it is not a very big job. Just take the two right side motor mount nuts off,use a bar to tilt the engine enough to put a 2 by 4 piece of wood under it.This will allow enough room to get at the 2 bolts holding the pump in place. 1/4 in. drive ratchet with a short extension and a 10 mm socket is all you will need. But before you go and do that, Id check to see that your battery is up to at least 12.5 volts. This sounds like it could be your problem. You should be able to hear the low pressure pump running when you hit the start button to prime the system or when you pull the starting rope the first time.

If I remember correctly the pump you are talking about was a warranty issue and should have already been replaced if all the updates were done. It might be worth checking into, maybe they'll still cover it if they said all the updates were done when they were not.

10-1 its the low pressure fuel pump under the motor. No its not a huge project. do as mentioned above BUT when getting a new one DO NOT get one from ski-doo. Go to your local napa store can get exact same pump for i think $20. been 2 years since i bought one so. Also do not put it back under the engine. mount it near the battery or by the chaincase so its easily changed out in the future as it will go bad again.

search on dootalk for the napa part number but its like half the price of the doo one.

not a hard project, i did it in the dirt outside in like an hour by myself. relocate it to the chaincase area like mentioned, it makes working on it a LOT easier in the future if need be. even the updated electric ones suck, so replace it, cheap insurance.

Check battery for full charge or new one as mentioned, same happend to me at start of a season.
Good Luck

I am on this--Battery and check it under load if you can. Then check all the electricial connections--especially down by the regulator.

My 05 has never had a Fuel pump issue--It did get the updates of course--but even new--I was able to run it down to fumes and never missed a beat. Not saying this is not it--but check these other 2 items first--
