Need Turbo Expert Help

Hello, Iam new to this site but had some issues with my TPRO.

My turbocharger bearings are shot, Oil pump is still working great. Sled has been working great all season. 750 miles.

Gt2860, only thing that happened is I blew my charge off during the ride, checked turbo right away afterwards and it was good, Rode out with no charge tube on and when I got back to the trailer (15miles) turbo spins rough and bearings sound noisy.

Now it wont build boost.

What would cause the turbo to fail with no charge tube on?

Thanks for the help.

Snow injestion and rust? How long did it sit from the time you rode out till you fixed it and tried to ride again?

Wierd. Maybe plugged with snow or a chunk of ice that wouldnt allow it to spin. Other then that i dont see what could have possibly happened.

Oh. I was thinking wrong. Yah if it was still hooked to the exhaust and there was no tube connecting to the Intercooler or throttle bodies that is what happened. Same as in a big truck. If you have an big enough air leak in the Charge air cooler it will wipe out a turbo fast. Turbo needs to have some kind of pressure to keep it from overspooling. Sorry i didnt catch this sooner.

Anyone else have any insight on this, any experts?

Not really a expert but...............
What kind of oil pump do you have. Did you run it hard and shut the sled down without letting the turbo cool off? Garretts uses a plasic cage to hold there bearings in place it can destorte. I have seen the orifice going into the turbos oil inlet get pluged with crap before aswell. Got coolent going to your turbo?

I have a clear return hose so I can monitor that oil is flowing. And yes Coolant is plumbed to the turbo.

Too much boost! Just like ripping off a line to teach someone a lesson. Runs great for a short time, then you break things.

Anyone else agree with this? Turboboys? BD? HM? Boost It? I find it hard to believe the turbo would overspin.

Thanks again for the help just looking for answers so it doesnt happen again.

This is what happened. There is no iffs ands or buts. Running the turbo for that long without the charge tube caused the turbo to over spool.

Yes a turbo will can can overspool. what happens is the bearing will get to a piont where the wheel is spinning faster than the bearings. this will wear flat spot in the bearings. making the turbo sound like sand or rocks are in the compressor housing. Somtimes you will also get a pinging noise when one bearing is out of round and gets stuck. the bearing will get stuck and the other bearings will hit it. thus the pinging noise.

this also happens when a turbo has had a good life and the bearings might be getting a bit worn out. most guys dont know how mush shaft play they have. untill the turbo goes boom.

a turbo when everything is working correctly spins at approx 140000 to 160000 rpm. take that up another 20000 rpm for free wheeling and the bearings are hating life.

of course there is no way to know exactly until it is gone through. But i believe you have been given some good answers.
