Need something better than a balaclava.....frost bite last weekend

So riding last weekend in sub zero temps with a steady wind and got some frost bite on my upper cheek bones. Had a balaclava on and didn't even feel cold, but sure enough got frost bite. I have to have my nose exposed while using a balaclava so I don't fog up my goggles and when I do this is exposes my upper cheek bone under my helmet.

What I'm wondering, is there anything better than duck tape I can put directly on my face to help prevent frost bite? Saw some guy with white material stuck to his face last weekend. Don't know what it is though...

Ski doo makes a nice one for there BVS helmet that is way warmer than a regular Balaclava.

There is another one too..... Hmmmmmmmm What the he!! is the name??

If I can think of it I will let ya know.

Get yourself a NMFH and you'll be fine in subzero temps. You'll be made fun of by the snowest majority but wth, you'll be riding without worries. Some people are just too involved with themselves and satisfying the rest of the sheep to fit in.

I've heard this works well.

Or you can just get like a HJC universal nose piece that fits in your helmet. I find them a bit of a pain to get your helmet off and on but if does help. I've froze my nose and cheeks so many times now that it doesn't take much to freeze them anymore so I gotta be careful.

Snowsnob, What is the name of that Balaclava you posted? Who makes it and where can I buy? Any help will be appreciated, it looks exactly what I would like. Thanks

That is a no-fog breath deflector. They work great with moto-cross style helmets, and so-so with helmets that have a visor. I usually just wear the no-fog and then my helmet, but on really cold days you can where the balaclava and then the no-fog.

I just ordered a new no-fog off of dennis kirk for around $35.

wore the no fog mask last year, a pain to put on but it works, lst ride when it was 37 below, i wore a baclava and a breath box on my hjc helmet, fit it so no skin is exposed, didn't fog, worked great

I know it's all about looking cool....but full face helmets work pretty well when its cold out. ;)

You just can NOT beat a full face helmet (not neccessaryly a NMFH)for the cold days. And Marv1 says it well.

i usually have this problem, but this year i bought a klim balaclava and a set of the '09 509s which have a pretty good chunk of foam around them and so far no frost bite on the cheeks.

I rode in my Klim Balaclava this weekend without problems. It has the wind stopper stuff on the front. It makes a huge difference.

CO 2.0, I suspect that you live to ride like the rest of us, but when it's this cold out, just stay home for christ sakes !!!!!!!!! I'm most likely just a wimp, but I won't ride if it's colder than about -15*C.

breath deflectors work great. you just have to get used to wearing one. keep your face and neck warm and also help keep your gogs from freezing up. can't ride without mine now...
