need some input on a sled i just bought from a dealer(Action Motor sports)

well it all started when i found a add from Action motor sports in Idaho falls, found a 08-800 for a good price,I know all about the problems but am a glutten for punishement as i own a 900 too.But anyways I asked all the ? and was told it had a new motor with 800 miles on it and everything was checked out and was good but turned out to be new jug and pistons with 400 miles on it.I asked about the mag side piston and was told it was good.So i drove 500 miles to pick up sled looked great was treated great and was assured sled was solid. So got it home unloaded it a put it in the shop to clean ev and founf mag side piston had scoring on it,called them up and was told to see how bad it was to scope it,but i fugured it had to be torn down anywas so i took head off, piston was toast, but jug look good from what i could see,so they sent me new pistons and gaskets which i thought was great as i had no miles on it.So when to rebuld it took jug off and founf jug was toast too, couldnt see it with piston in it,called them up again and was told sorry cant help you.Should i be mad or not at least they might split a jug with me,as i was told the sled was ready for the snow.what do you guys think.

Call Action on monday and ask to talk with Chris Wright. He is the owner. Tell him your story about how you were told it was ready for the snow. Maybe it was ready for a few miles. Good luck.

ya i would take it back but it is 500 miles one way,if they would just pay half the jug would be nice.

If they said it was good to go they should pay for all the jug, not just half. If you pulled it out of the trailer and pulled it into the shop and that is it, they need to fix it. Can't understand why people only put one new piston in instead of doing both when it is apart in the first place.

I would guess that the previous owner did it to make it run enough to trade it in. The dealer is likely not making much $$ on it knowing they are going to be hard to sell. Finally gets it out the door and finds out they were taken too.

I have had cylinders sent to US Chrome (I know there are other shops that do this work too) and have had good luck with having them rebuilt. You will need to send the intended piston with the cylinder so they can match the bore up when done. Unless of course, Action steps up and sends you a cylinder.

You buy a sled that is notorious for scoring pistons and you don't take 5 minutes to pull the exhaust valves?

ya i know my bad on that part it would of only taken me 5 min,but i believed them i guess shame on me

I can't believe we are even talking about this.

I sell boats, and we wouldn't balk at all about something like this.
The customer deserves what he was told he was being sold. PERIOD!

We spend thousands every year on after the sale items of non-warranty boats.
Why?
It's the right thing to do, and 9 times out of 10, you get it back!

On this one I would have to say, buyer beware.
Any assistance from the dealership after it left the doors is a benefit.

That being said, Action is the only dealership I have dealt with that will never get another penny from me again.

ya and i was going to buy another sled from them too,and had 3 guys from my home town talking to them about sleds and one was a new pro, well they wont get anymore of our business and i will tell who will listen of how i was treated

Technically they are not liable to do anything. I am sure you signed something that said "sold as is no warranty". I am sure they did not send the sled out the door knowing they were going to get one over on you. As a dealer you can only do so much on a used vehicle inspection. There happens to be problems on anything that did not get found on the inspection.

If they are a stand up dealership they should help you out somehow. I know every dealership I have worked at would have at least helped with parts and maybe more.

I sell cars, and technically if you bought a used vehicle (sled in this case) with no warranty, you are screwed. HOWEVER, there are the good old (and extremely vague)consumer protection laws stating that a vehicle sold by a dealer has to be suitable for its intended purpose for a reasonable amount of time. So in this case, it's intended use would be snowmobiling, and a reasonable amuunt of time would likely be somewhat longer than loading and unloading. So they are riding the edge of whether it's legal or not to tell you to stuff it.

Either way, they should definetly cover that. One of the biggest reasons you buy a used vehicle (sled) from a dealer is because you hope they've checked it out and it's good to go. Now, obviously snowmobiles are huges piles of junk, BUT it should still last longer than that. Particularily if you specifically asked about that part and got a specific answer. We would never get away with that, nor try to....

well no phone calls back from them or emails as i emailed them too,so I guess i am eating the jug, guess i wont be buying anything from them again.to bad it was a nice place.

Any dealer worth his salt would help you out with this. Unfortunately This type of thing is becoming the norm. Mono block cylinders are not cheap to rebuild. Pm me the details about your cylinder i may be able to help out.

I agree, I would have too. But it's the principle concept here. Some people don't have that knowledge and are relying on a dealer to sell them something sound, albeit used. Hopefully they will work with him long distance. They have a reputation to uphold.

Just don't bash away at them yet. Work with them and maybe it will come out good.

The dealer should at the very least give up any profit that he may have made to repair the problem, I do not think he should go negative to uphold a sale, as he may have been screwed also.
But in WY there is a 3 day lemon law that you can return a vehicle, pretty much if you don't like it take it back.
Although If he proved he had made no money I would expect everything at cost and if you where close a deal on labor.
I personally would have ate it, I guaranty if he ate it he would make the money back from word of mouth. Also when you have to "make it right" you rarely make the mistake like that again, (take a junk trade, but then again it must be hard being a poo dealer)

Take it back! $300 in gas money and a day to do it are cheaper / quicker than fixing it yourself.

The legalities concerning their liabilities may / may not be in their favor but that doesn't really matter IMO. Talk to the owner in person..... make him turn you away face to face. If he chooses to operate a dishonest / low rate business and deny you justice, let him know in no uncertain terms that the word will be spread... FAR and WIDE!

Maybe bring up Snow West / BCR and the number of members that will be hearing about his decision....
