Need help with oil pump...

I'm working on a 97RMK and over the summer it developed a large pool of oil under the sled right about in the area of the oil pump. It is has since stopped leaking and the oil reservoir is still about 2/3 full, so I haven't been able to find the leak. I am wanting to take the 2 or 3 bolts out that hold the oil pump on the motor so I can get some slack in the oil lines for a good inspection of the lines. When I take the pump off is there anything I need to look for and does it go back on any certain way, or does it just bolt back up? Also, I know you're not supposed to pre-mix as the crank bearings will run dry, but how long will it take to trash the bearings if I was to pre-mix? Is it gonna happen within minutes to hours, or will it take a few hundred miles? Thanks for any help.

Premixing will not hurt the crank bearings. I ran premix on my 97 700 for 2 years with no problems. You can bolt the oil pump back in. Are you sure its the oil pump and not the chaincase leaking? Seems odd that it would stop leaking if the reservoir isn't empty? Are the oil lines empty or full of air bubbles? If so, you need to run some pre mix when you start the motor until the oil supply reaches the pump. When you do start the sled, wire the oil pump wide open and let the sled idle until all bubbles are removed from all oil lines.

When I first saw it was leaking I checked the chaincase and that is okay. I then felt around on the oil lines where they come off of the pump and run underneath the pull rope assembly and they were all wet with oil. I'm unable to thoroughly check the lines as there isn't enough slack to pull them out from under where the pull rope bolts on. I was thinking maybe the engine had rubbed a hole in one the lines. As to why it quit leaking... I don't understand that at all. I thought it may have even leaked from the tank and ran down, but that line seems dry. I filled the tank back up so I'll check and see if I find any fresh oil tomorrow. Thanks for the help.
