Need Help With Hard Starting Sled

2001 Summit X 800 High mark has a hard time starting, almost like its not getting enough fuel to start, we had to keep pouring gas in the cylinders to get it started then it would run. Any ideas???

Pickup in tank plugged? Hose fall off? Fuel pump diaphram shot? Plungers for the enrichners(choke)not pulling up?

When its cold? Hot? Need more info. If hot starting, then it could be that your fuel is evaporating in the carbs. If cold, then it could be your choke plunger.

Pulled the tank today and checked the pickup, looks fine. Checked the plungers, they look fine. Pulled the fuel pump apart and that seems to be fine but Im not sure. Is there a way to test the fuel pump? Or does anyone have any other suggestions?

How much compression do you have?

Check your reeds, they have a nasty habit of de-laminating, makes the sled very hard starting.

have a friend having the same issue and his carb boots were cracked sucking in air made it really hard to start....

Yep, reed cages delaminating and/or rings shot. VERY common on the early 800's.

DOES ANY ONE KNOW HOW TO TEST A COIL AND WHAT THE SPECS SHOULD BE FOR A COIL 512059363 2001 800 HIGHMARK X

I PUT A TESTER ON THE SPARK PLUG WIRES AND ONE SIDE IS REAL ERRATIC (LIGHTS UP THEN STOPS THEN LIGHTS AGAIN) . SOUNDS LIKE THE SLED IS RUNNING ON 1 CYLINDER, sorry for the caps forgot I had it on

Stator maybe? Erratic spark makes me think that. You did try new plugs right. Also, check to be sure they are the correct plugs. Those things won't run right with the regular (B9ES) style plugs.

Yes, the coating on the early 800 rings was prone to flaking, my '01 did it. More than likely the reed cages are the bulk of the issue.

Actually it is a possibility, you need a compression test to verify. Do one before spending any more money on anything else.

Rings are fine then IMO. Winter Brew is pretty smart with Doo motors, I'd be looking at the reed cages next. If its not that, its in the carbs somewhere. Is the stator still acting up? It could be your coil as well that is providing erratic spark

What did the reed cages look like inside?

Got the specs for the coil today from the dealer, did a ohm test and found the plug wire to plug wire was 18.1 and without wires 11.9, the guy at Doo told me it should be 4 to 6 k ohm so I guess it is the coil. Keeping my fingers crossed on this one. I should of never sold this sled to a friend because now I'm working on it.
