Need Help - Newbiw

Ok guys - will need a little help here.

Son just got a dirtbike (XR 125) from his "uncle" for Xmas. This of course means dad will need to buy one too, because hey he can't ride alone and will need supervision.

So I will first want to buy something used. I have enough $ tied up in sleds.

I have not ridden a bike for any length of time in close to 25 years. When I quit, I was racing 250 and Open bikes. That was still in the 2 stroke days. I think last bikes I had were the 1985 Husky 250 and 500. Pretty much just stopped completely when I started barefoot waterskiing competitively.

So I have no idea what I should be looking for in new bikes. I am thinking something in an enduro cross country? Likely we will just be trail riding here and taking bikes to BC around Vernon to trail ride. Lots of great 2 track there. Also - will be putting around for a couple of years with my son - so I will need something with mostly low end.

Had the thought that it might be fun to trade off one of the sleds I have for around here and build a snowbike? What would work best for that?

Any help would be appreciated

Its pretty tough to go wrong with a KTM RFS if wanting a used bike.. Tough as nails, nice plush ride, handles well and has the magic button 06 was the best year 450 or 525 EXC or XCW.
You can also build them to be very powerful if the need arises.

You may be able to pick up some left over Husky's 450 or even better 511 for a GOOD deal -- as well never dismiss the Old Yamaha WR or yz450 Tough bikes plush for the trail and with a pipe they work pretty good as a snow-donkey too.
There are a couple running around here. There is a complete set up in Vancouver for sale a few posts down. Also a 2011 YZ Fuelinjectet set up south of the border.

The 2003-2007 ktm's with the RFS engine are a great choice. Something at least with a 450 cc engine to spin a Timbersled ST track in powder would be a minimum for your area in any of the popular brands. I am located in nearby Revelstoke and are familiar with your snow conditions.

I also have 2012 Timbersled ST 121 kit that i just took off my 06 ktm XC 525.I purchased this kit in Jan 2012 and swapped over to my new longtrack kit last week. I have the horsepower to turn the longtrack but the longtrack kit wasn't available till the fall off 2012.
The ST 121 kit is in excellent condition and i have it listed in the classifieds section of this website under snow hawk/ snowbike under the heading of riggsy. If interested i am located in Revelstoke BC and i do get to the okanagan occasionally.

The track kits are universal mount and all you would need is the fit kit for the bike of your choice. They retail for approx $300 and our local dealer in Revelstoke stocks the ktm fit kits. If you would like more info i can be reached at riggsy@telus.net
