Need help installing a strike plate for deadbolt.

I'm trying to beef up the security on this POS that I'm living in, changing all the locks to good ones and whatnot but I've run into a problem. The door I'm putting a deadbolt into right now wasn't built for it, have the hole cut in the door but am having issues figuring out how to cut the hole for the strike plate.

Is there an "easy" way to do it without the need for a router? IIRC Dremel used to have a kit out to do it, but obviously they don't anymore.

Just mark it and use a GOOD, SHARP wood chisel.

Shouldn't take more than about 15-20 minutes.
I do it that way all the time. I prefer the chisel to a router.

For the inset (strike bolt) just use a drill bit to set the majority and then use the chisel to finish it off and square up the hole.

use a pencil a color the end of the dead bolt and shut the door.open deadbolt so it marks the door jamb where it needs to go.predrill and screw on plate upside down.scribe with razor knife, then chisel out.

+1 for chisel.

Edit: I assume you've googled this already? There's some good DIY sites that'll walk you through installation, different grades of locks, etc...

Problem with the chisel is I don't own one ;) and I have a router sitting here. Oh well, will go buy a chisel in the AM and do it that way. The door side for the handle is all FUBARed, the last owner didn't have a clue and its all sorts of crooked. Going to try and find one of those brass slip over pieces (if you know what I mean  ) and a one piece strike plate for both the knob and the deadbolt.

already have the locks and have most of it installed. Just hit a snag with not having the proper tools to do the job on the door frame for the strike plate ;)

dont forget the long screws into the king stud or it wont do much good.i countersank a steel plate under the strikeplate so it cant be kicked in.

The Schlage I bought came with one of those plates to put under the strikeplate. Might see about a stronger steel section though, run it in with lag screws :D

Screw it on first then take a utility knife and cut around it Carefully...push hard. Then when you gouge it out with your rough chisel or teeth it will still look great.
