Want to buy my best friend a nice set for his B-day. Would like a smaller set so there easer to carry on the ATV, sled, or Hiking.

What do I get??

.

Some of the nicest you will ever touch are leicia's...they are pretty spendy but I think they make some reasonably priced small ones...

What about power?? 8x42, 10x50, 12x50 I don't fully understand all that.

the sizes are how many times they magnify the image(8-10-12) versus the size of the glass(42-50-60)..depending on what he is using them for..most people want around a 8 magnification and a 42 lens...of course the bigger the lens the better the light is collected up to a point..and the bigger the magnification the closer objects appear..typical small(pocket) binocs are 8-32..where as a tripod mounted set of search the whole mountain side for a pin would be 12-50 or more...with optics you get what you pay for...the more you pay the better you see...period....

The first number is the magnification. The second number is field of view. I have a drawer full of binoculars, all sizes including image stabilizers. When I'm hiking or snowmobiling I always prefer my compact Bausch & Lomb 10 X 25. You can get a good pair from a $100 on up.

Image stabilizers are very nice and I see they have some compact ones available now. But spendy. Steiners are a real status symbol in the hunter crowd.

I don't take the expensive ones out in the field because I would hate to break or lose them.

My order of preference for brands:

Zeiss, Swarovski, Leica, Leupold, Nikon

What I own:

Nikon Monarch ATB 10x42. For carrying in the field, they are great. They aren't the best for spotting all day, but that's why I have a spotting scope too. I think the camo ones are about $320 and the black are $300. My roommate has the equivelant in the Cabelas brand and they are just as good, but the same price...i went name brand.

If money is no option, Zeiss. I can't find better glass in a more compact package that weighs less. My opinion. For the money though, Nikons are tough to beat.

The bino size won't be a concern if he uses these too Bino Buddy. They hold the Bino's close to your chest and allow you to raise/use them fast. I would never carry nice glass on an ATV. These keep your Bino's warm too which helps with fog. If I'm ever your friend, get me the Swarovski 10x42 EL's. Thank you. EW

I have a Nikon "Pro Staff" 9 X 25, binoculars. Nice size, fits in the palm of your hand.
Nice crisp focus, and good light gathering.
I always carry them with me when sledding. I paid about $140.00 for them, about 2 years ago.

The Alpen brand 10x42 with the bak4 optics seem pretty good to me and at a really good price.

in the bang for the buck cateagory its REALLY tough to pass on Nikon's... I bought an inexpensive set of Nikon Action series in RealTree AP, they work friggin great... for the money i don't think i could have bought anything better... cost me about 120 bucks...
