NEED HELP - 3rd engine in 200 miles

well, here goes the saga....I bought a used 05 800 rev from a local guy - had a skidoo crate race motor but a bolt came off the flywheel and "shot" through the block looking like a 44 Mag hole (only 100 miles on it). So bought a rebuilt engine from skidoo and had the dealer install it...well...got 27 miles on it before she shattered the piston and destroyed the motor. So got another rebuilt skidoo factory motor (from skidoo) and the dealer installed it...only to make it 57 miles before it ceased up. They are to take it apart tomorrow and see what happend. I need some input.....when I look at the plugs the look very lean but instead of being white they are "rust" color. I premix the gas about 32:1 so I a safe, since I really didn't wanna blow another motor...not only the time of the sled down but paying for rentals and the repairs. It has 280 jets in it and riding about 9500 feet or so here in Utah (nobletts area). When I picked it up a week ago (after new motor) I asked about jetting and they said they did not check them but it ran good and was ready to go. Also it had very little low and mid range - had to be 80%+ throttle to get much response outta the sled, woudln't idle hardly at all - about 5-10 seconds, usually takes 3 pulls when cold and 1 once warm...was taking 10-15 when cold and 3 when warm. PLEASE HELP ME OUT HERE...THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR ADVICE as I am doubting the dealer will wanna warranty this one (as we are still waiting to hear from skidoo on the last one)...but I am pretty sure not my fault at all - so I need to know what I am looking for an ready to present my case. Thank you and please ask me any other questions you may have.

That's not an envious situation to be in. 05 was a good year for the rev, have you heard anything from any other 05 owners concerning similar problems?

Concerning the plugs, it is always hard to tell for certain but if they are rust colored then they are in between just right and too lean. My plugs go in between sometimes as well but not quite rust. Before they give you sled back, it would be good to have them check and confirm ski-doo jet specifications and then coordinate to ensure that is what your sled has.

The reason I suggest is that it depends on the motor that was in the engine when you bought it. Without knowing specifics it sounds like there is a possibility that the first engine was a bit mod-ed and required a 'not-stock' jet setting. When taking the first engine, there is a good chance the ski-doo dealer didn't even think to check jetting when he put the first rebuilt ski-doo motor replacement in the sled.

Food for thought, I have had similar problems with some of my sleds in the past and some of my riding buddies are experiencing the woes of guessing as we speak. I feel ya.

Sparticase.

I do believe that should have had 370 jets. The dealer should have checked the system out for you. I would guess it is adjusted way lean on the bottom too, thats why you had to pull the needles out of the jets before it would run right.
Sounds like if it was'nt for bad luck, you would have no luck at all.

Get all the stock specs for that year motor and ECM. Verify that it is completely stock factory default settings. The only way your gonna be able to figure anything out is to get the engine and ECM to a known safe baseline. Don't even adjust it to run at 9500 ft. Let it run rich for now until you know you have a solid motor, then do 1 thing at a time.

I am assuming that your oil injection has been deleted? 280s are really low. The dealer has 400s in my 05 800 and I ride at 9000' and up. My motor burned down this season too. I had a leaky crank seal and the gasket that goes between the motor and reed cages had a tear. That is what created my lean conditions. I read in my 05 shop manual and the 05 Race manual that too much oil in the system can cause a lean burn down too. I don't have the books with me, but I'll be getting them back this weekend.
