Just guessing that you ride similar to us. We needed a lot more gas on our sleds! We have ran out with 16 gal already on our old 600 - 136's back in the 90's. Our bigger sleds seem to doo much better in the same conditions tho.
Our fix ever since an extra 6 gal jerry wasn't enough was to go to a full tank on behind. When we updated to new sleds in '02 we built the tank ratt into the sled. Our original seats have only one days riding on them before we shrink wrapped them and put them "up".
Here is a pic of one for my chumms Pol RMK.
Here is a pic of his Pol once finished.
My Doo is the same deal....
We did NOT like the idea of puting gas up under the hood - above the clutch like the one set-up that you could buy back then. Not sure if they still make that or not? I can't imagine the Product Liability Ins premiums for that kit!
We have our plumbed in to our sleds tho. Either add a valve and draw from one - then the other, or make up a fitting for the top of the OEM tank to be able to draw from the second tank. This works well normally, but my main tank gas cap must be venting here recently. ???
This gits the weight further fwd as opposed to behind the seat. When it was clear on the back you could feel it, but now - with it under the seat - it's hard to tell the diff if it is full or empty.
We seldom burn more than 15 gal/day, but it' sure is nice having a little extra for just in case - or really heavy snow days!
Note vent tube in rear filler neck.
