Need a little trailer wiring help!

I can't for the life of me figure this out. The trailer is a simple 2 place Haul Rite. I replaced the four pin plug because 2 of the wires going into the plug were breaking off. No big deal I bought a new plug and reconnected it to the existing trailer wiring. Everything works fine except-when the headlights are turned on the driver's side brake light doesn't work. When the headlights are turned off-the brake light works fine.

I have disconnected all of the grounds, and cleaned off any dirt, debris, paint, etc. where the grounds are connected to the trailer frame. There are 4 grounds total-one at the 4 pin plug, second is at the three marker lights in between the tail lights, third and fourth are at the tail lights themselves.

To make matters more confusing when I actually connect the ground at the driver's side tail light it turns fully on when the headlights are turned on-like I'm hitting the brakes even though I'm not. When I disconnect the ground at the driver's side tail light everything works fine-except of course when I hit the brakes when the headlights are turned on, then the tail light goes out, but everything else works fine.

Any one have any ideas??

so maybe I got a screw sticking into one of the wires leading to the tail light? Or some insulation on one of the wires has come off and it's hitting the frame and shorting out? There's only two wires leading to the tail light. One for the blinker and one for the tail light. I'm assuming the short has to be in the wire that powers the tail light and not the blinker wire, am I correct in that assumption??

I think maybe you did something different (wrong) from the original wiring. Anyway you did not have a short, (short circuit). If you did, a fuse would have blown or a circuit breaker would have tripped.

If it is a tilt bed trailer run the ground from the plug all the way to the bed of the trailer. You might not be getting a good ground from at the hinge point.
